Description
Rakshata Chawla is a supporting character in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, serving as the head of the Black Knights' research and development team. She is an Indian scientist, twenty-nine years old during the events of R2, who was once the world's leading authority on welfare cybernetics and prosthetics before turning to the development of Knightmare Frames in the Military District of India. Her earlier academic life included study in Britannia at the Imperial Colchester Institute, where she worked alongside Lloyd Asplund and his junior Cécile Croomy, a connection that later becomes the basis for a long-running professional rivalry.

Rakshata is physically striking, a tall and slender woman with dark skin, long wavy light-blonde hair, and aquamarine green eyes, usually distinguished by a purple diamond-shaped bindi on her forehead. Her attire in R2 typically consists of a low-cut orange shirt beneath a Black Knights laboratory coat, lilac pants, and white shoes, and she is rarely seen without her tobacco pipe. Her demeanor is relaxed and laid-back to the point of appearing cold; she is frequently found lounging on a sofa, even during meetings, and a couch is installed on the bridge of the Black Knights' flagship, the Ikaruga, for her convenience. Beneath this casual exterior lies an arrogant, direct nature and complete confidence in her engineering abilities. She proudly regards her creations as her children and calls herself the mother of machines such as the Guren Type-02, and she takes any unauthorized tampering with her work as a personal insult. When Lloyd and Cécile modify her retrieved Guren without her permission, her anger is a notable departure from her usual composure. She is also capable of genuine warmth toward those close to her and conceals an altruistic side, having originally pursued her career out of a desire to help people through medical cybernetics and later to end war through her creations.

Rakshata's motivations are not driven primarily by loyalty to any ideology. She joined the Black Knights because she was amused by the appearance of the masked figure Zero and because the organization offered her the opportunity to gather data and test her designs in real combat conditions. Her interest in Zero and her love of practical field testing keep her engaged even when the rebellion suffers setbacks, and she once remarked that while she originally only wanted information for her work, it would be a shame to leave the group. Her deeper stated purpose in moving from humanitarian technology to weapons development is the belief that superior machines can bring an end to conflict.

Her role in the story is that of the rebellion's scientific backbone. Tasked by the Six Houses of Kyoto with developing Japanese-made Knightmare Frames, she supplied the Black Knights with the Gekka units and pilot suits designed to improve survivability, then formally joined the organization when the Gekka was deployed. After Zero reorganized the Black Knights, she was appointed head of the technology development team. She is the creator of the Guren Mk-II and its radiant wave surger arm weapon, and she also developed the Gefjun Disturber, a force-field generator that disables all sakuradite-powered technology within its area of effect, blocks radar, and interferes with hadron-based weaponry. The Gefjun Disturber proves crucial in neutralizing the advanced Britannian Knightmare Lancelot during key battles. In R2, she continues as chief of science after the Black Knights are rebuilt and the United Federation of Nations is formed, overseeing development of mass-production units such as the Akatsuki, the airborne flagship Ikaruga, Zero's personal Shinkiro, and the upgraded Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. She survives the Black Knights' defeat and operates abroad between seasons before returning to the organization's service.

Her key relationships shape much of her screen presence. Her rivalry with Lloyd Asplund is the most prominent; though they are on opposite sides of the war, they share an obsessive passion for technology, recognize each other's genius, and at times cooperate when the situation demands, such as when analyzing the FLEIJA weapon. Cécile Croomy, as Lloyd's junior and Rakshata's former colleague, observes that the feud may have originated from a minor misunderstanding in their shared past. Rakshata addresses Zero with a familiar, casual directness and treats him as a fascinating subject rather than an authority to defer to, while her practical engineering support gives Lelouch the hardware his strategies require. Her relationship with the Guren's pilot, Kallen Kozuki, is defined by her role as the machine's creator and the trust placed in her designs.

Development-wise, Rakshata moves from an observer collecting data to a central figure in the rebellion's military structure, and her trajectory reflects the series' theme that revolutions are also fought in laboratories. Her attitudes do not shift dramatically; rather, the narrative reveals the layers beneath her relaxed exterior, including her pride, her protective care for her machines, and her quieter humanitarian motivations. In the post-series era, she becomes chairwoman of the World Scientific Committee and establishes her own private organization, Pearl Party, built around a group of child prodigies including her sister Shanti, continuing her work on Knightmare development in peacetime.

Her notable abilities lie entirely in science and engineering rather than combat. She is one of the most intelligent characters in the series, with expertise spanning medical cybernetics, weapons design, and advanced robotics. Her original concepts, particularly the radiant wave technology and the Gefjun Disturber, give the Black Knights capabilities that rival or exceed Britannian innovations, and her willingness to test her creations in live operations makes her both a field engineer and a hands-on researcher. She embodies the idea that the success of Zero's rebellion depends as much on the work of engineers and scientists as on its soldiers and strategists, and her machines remain among the defining elements of the Black Knights' fighting strength throughout R2.
