Description
Marianne vi Britannia was the fifth imperial consort of Emperor Charles zi Britannia and the mother of Lelouch and Nunnally. Born a commoner under the name Marianne Lamperouge, she rose through the ranks of the Britannian military solely on merit, becoming a Knight of the Round and earning the nickname Marianne the Flash for her exceptional speed and reflexes in combat. She was a test pilot for early Knightmare Frame development, notably piloting the Ganymede in partnership with the Ashford Foundation. After Charles became emperor, she married him and stepped away from active knighthood to become an empress, giving birth to Lelouch and later Nunnally.

Marianne was described as exceptionally beautiful, with long black hair and lavender eyes. Early portrayals depict her as sweet, kind-hearted, and deeply protective of her children, but also possessing a rebellious and unconventional spirit. She was known for acts such as riding a horse through the palace audience chamber and fighting off multiple other imperial consorts at once. She earned the admiration of several members of the royal family, including Cornelia li Britannia, who idolized her and investigated her death.

Seven years before the start of the main story, Marianne was assassinated in the Aries Imperial Villa. It was later revealed that she had been killed by V.V., Charles's brother, who was jealous of her closeness to the emperor. Before her death, Marianne had formed a contract with the immortal C.C. and received a Geass. This power activated for the first time as she lay dying, allowing her consciousness to transfer into the body of the six-year-old Anya Alstreim, who had witnessed the attack. Within Anya's mind, Marianne could communicate telepathically with C.C. and eventually told Charles the truth of her death. To protect Lelouch and Nunnally from V.V., Charles sent them to Japan as political hostages.

In Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, Marianne is revealed to have survived in a limited sense, continuing to interact with C.C. from within Anya's body. She had been working alongside Charles on the Ragnarök Connection, a plan to merge all human consciousness into a collective, creating a world without lies or suffering. Her motivations were rooted in a disillusionment with the corruption of Britannian society and a desire to change the fundamental nature of the world, even at the cost of her own children's happiness. She and C.C. had joined Charles and V.V. in this pledge years earlier, though C.C. later distanced herself.

As a character, Marianne serves as both a driving motivation for Lelouch's rebellion and a hidden antagonist. Her death is the catalyst for his quest for revenge and his resolution to create a peaceful world for Nunnally. Later, the revelation of her continued existence and her complicity in Charles's scheme forces Lelouch to confront the reality that the mother he idealized was willing to sacrifice him for her ideals. Her relationship with Lelouch becomes one of opposition, as he rejects her vision and ultimately disowns her.

Her notable abilities include her Geass, which allows her to transfer her consciousness to another person upon death and maintain telepathic communication with C.C. She was also a peerless Knightmare pilot, with reflexes and strategic acumen that placed her among the strongest knights in Britannian history. Her playful and teasing side came through in her conversations with C.C., whom she often prodded about her attachment to Lelouch. Despite her death, her influence permeates the entire story, shaping the actions of Lelouch, Charles, Cornelia, and many others who admired or feared her.
