Description
Nunnally Lamperouge, born Nunnally vi Britannia, is the younger sister of Lelouch Lamperouge in the anime Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. She is the daughter of Emperor Charles zi Britannia and Marianne vi Britannia, which makes her a former princess of the Holy Britannian Empire and a distant member of the imperial line of succession. Her early childhood was spent happily at the Aries Villa with her mother and brother, but that life was shattered when her mother was assassinated. Nunnally was caught in the attack and was left paralyzed in both legs and blind. For most of the story, her blindness is believed to be psychological trauma caused by witnessing her mother's death, though it is later revealed that her father placed a Geass on her to take away her sight as a protective measure. After Lelouch confronted their father about their mother's murder, the two siblings were exiled to Japan as political prisoners, where they met Suzaku Kururugi. When Britannia invaded Japan, Lelouch took the surname Lamperouge, their mother's maiden name, to hide their identities, and the siblings found refuge with the Ashford family, living on the campus of Ashford Academy, where Nunnally attends middle school alongside her brother.
In personality, Nunnally is gentle, patient, and remarkably kind. She is almost always seen with a small smile on her face, and she maintains a warm and trusting outlook despite the hardships she has endured. She is polite and considerate, and she deliberately avoids using the derogatory term Eleven, preferring to call the people of Japan by their proper name. She dislikes conflict and holds pacifist beliefs, rejecting violence as a means of achieving change. Even though she is blind, she enjoys drawing, and she has a sharp emotional sensitivity that allows her to perceive when someone is lying, an ability she demonstrates by holding another person's hand. Beneath her serene manner lies considerable inner strength, as she endures overwhelming difficulties with composure and continues to care for those around her rather than dwelling on her own suffering.
Her motivations are shaped by a desire to create a world free of hatred and oppression, a goal she holds for the sake of her brother and for others who suffer as she has. Her existence and her condition are the driving inspiration behind Lelouch's rebellion, as he seeks to build a peaceful world where she can live happily. After the death of her half-sister Euphemia li Britannia, Nunnally takes up her sister's vision and vows to reinstate the Special Administrative Zone in Japan, believing, like Euphemia and Suzaku, that the world can be changed through gentle and peaceful means. She also carries a deep sense of responsibility for the consequences of her family's actions and later seeks to atone for the suffering caused by Lelouch, even to the point of taking on burdens far heavier than her frail condition would suggest.
In the story, Nunnally's role evolves considerably. In the first season she functions largely as the emotional anchor of Lelouch's cause and the reason he fights. She is kidnapped near the end of the season, and Lelouch abandons his forces in a failed attempt to rescue her, an event that contributes to the defeat of the Black Knights and his own capture. In the second season, the memories of those who knew her are erased, and Lelouch himself forgets her until his memories are restored, with Rolo Lamperouge having been placed in her position as his supposed younger brother. Nunnally reappears as the Viceroy of Area 11, still remembering Lelouch as her brother but unaware that he is Zero. In this role she works toward peaceful reform, confronting officials who downplay the suffering of the Japanese population and insisting that policies be rewritten so they do not place unfair burdens on ordinary people. She is later seemingly killed by a F.L.E.I.J.A. warhead, but she survives and reappears aboard the floating fortress Damocles, where she is backed by Schneizel el Britannia as a candidate for the throne. Schneizel manipulates her into opposing Lelouch, and she insists on controlling the F.L.E.I.J.A. launch system so that she can personally atone for her brother's sins. In her final confrontation with Lelouch, she intends to turn the Damocles into a symbol of hatred that would unite the world, a plan nearly identical to his own. Lelouch uses his Geass on her to take the launch key, telling her that he loves her even as he forces her compliance, and she calls him a demon as he leaves. After Lelouch's death, she comes to understand the true purpose of his self-sacrifice and devotes herself to maintaining peace, serving as an honorary advisor to a world humanitarian organization and continuing to share the ideals of gentleness and reconciliation.
Her key relationships define much of her character. Her bond with Lelouch is the most important relationship in her life, and she states that she loves him more than anyone else. He is equally devoted to her, and his love for her is the foundation of both his rebellion and his eventual plan for the world. She also shares a deep friendship with Suzaku Kururugi, who was her first friend in Japan and who remains close to the family for years, though their relationship becomes strained when Suzaku becomes a Knight of the Round and begins concealing the truth from her. She revered her half-sister Euphemia and carries on her dream of a peaceful Japan. She is cared for by Sayoko Shinozaki, and she treats others with compassion regardless of their station, as shown when she arranges better conditions and clothing for the captured Kallen Stadtfeld. Schneizel, by contrast, uses her as a figurehead in his bid for power, and her awareness of the manipulation around her grows as the story progresses.
Nunnally has no combat abilities and relies on a wheelchair and the assistance of others for mobility because of her paralysis. Her notable strengths are instead perceptive and emotional in nature. She can tell when people are deceiving her through physical contact, she remains calm and perceptive in political situations, and she possesses a powerful will of her own, strong enough to break her father's Geass through sheer determination. Her gentleness, resilience, and unwavering belief in peace function as a source of hope and moral direction for those around her, and it is ultimately her influence that gives meaning to the harsh choices her brother makes.
