TV-Series
Description
Kewell Soresi is a supporting antagonist in the first season of the anime. He is an officer in the Britannian Military and a prominent member of the Purist Faction, a group within the army that advocates for the supremacy of native Britannians over the empire's colonial subjects, known as Elevens. As the faction's second-in-command, his immediate superior is Jeremiah Gottwald. Kewell is a young man of 26 years with neatly combed blonde hair and blue eyes, and he carries himself with the pride expected of someone from a prestigious noble family.
Kewell is characterized by a strong sense of personal ambition that often overrides his official duties. While he presents a facade of a by-the-book officer, he is deeply motivated by self-preservation and a desire to climb the military hierarchy. Although he is a pureblood who holds the ideals of the Purist Faction, his loyalty is conditional. When the reputation of his superior, Jeremiah, is tarnished, Kewell does not hesitate to cast him aside, revealing a pragmatic and ruthless streak. He is willing to go to extreme lengths, including the elimination of his own commanding officer, to protect the status of his faction and advance his own career.
In the story, Kewell first appears as a secondary figure to Jeremiah, standing with him during the public persecution of the honorary Britannian soldier Suzaku Kururugi, who is falsely accused of murdering the viceroy, Clovis la Britannia. His role becomes more active following a pivotal incident known as the Orange Incident. During an operation led by Zero, the masked revolutionary, a secret code word is used to make it appear as though Jeremiah is a traitor collaborating with the enemy. With Jeremiah's reputation in ruins, Kewell seizes the opportunity to stage a coup within the Purist Faction. He leads a squad of officers to assassinate Jeremiah, believing that this act of "cleansing" is the only way to restore their organization's honor. This internal conflict culminates in a skirmish that is ultimately halted by the intervention of Princess Euphemia li Britannia.
Key relationships define Kewell's actions. His relationship with Jeremiah evolves from loyalty to open hostility and contempt, as he constantly derides his former leader with the humiliating epithet of "Orange". His pragmatism stands in contrast to fellow Purist Villetta Nu, who remains dedicated to Jeremiah. Kewell also has a familial connection to the series through his younger sister, Marika Soresi, who appears in the second season as a pilot in the elite Valkyrie Squadron.
Kewell's development is cut short by his demise during the Battle of Narita. Seeking to regain his standing after the failed coup, he joins the front lines against the resistance group known as the Black Knights. He engages the ace pilot Kallen Kozuki, who is piloting the advanced Guren Mk-II. Unable to match the enemy machine's power, his Sutherland is hit by its primary weapon, the Radiant Wave Surger. His Knightmare's emergency ejection system fails, and Kewell Soresi is killed in action.
In terms of abilities, Kewell is a competent officer and Knightmare Frame pilot, sufficient to hold a command position. However, his skills are shown to be vastly inferior to those of top-tier pilots, and he is notably less capable than both his former superior, Jeremiah, and the pilot who ultimately defeats him, Kallen. His primary notable ability lies in his ambition and political maneuvering within the military structure, rather than any exceptional combat prowess.
