TV-Series
Description
Atsushi Sawazaki is a minor but pivotal character in the narrative of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Before the series begins, he holds the position of chief cabinet secretary in the Japanese government under Prime Minister Genbu Kururugi. Following Japan's defeat and subsequent occupation by the Holy Britannian Empire, which renames the nation Area 11, Sawazaki does not remain to face the consequences. Instead, he flees the country and seeks refuge in the Chinese Federation. There, he establishes a Japanese government-in-exile, maintaining a claim to legitimate leadership while living safely outside of Britannian control.
Sawazaki is a pragmatic and opportunistic individual, driven primarily by the goal of restoring Japan's sovereignty, though his methods reveal a willingness to compromise that independence for the sake of power. He waits for over seven years, observing the unrest caused by the masked revolutionary Zero and his Black Knights. Interpreting the chaos as a favorable opportunity, he makes his move. With the military backing of the Chinese Federation and its general, Tsao, Sawazaki stages a return to Japan, seizing control of the Fukuoka Base in the Kyushu region. From this strategic foothold, he announces the resurrection of Japan as an independent nation.
His central role in the story is confined to the arc surrounding the Battle of Kyushu. While his declaration of independence initially appears to be a heroic act of liberation, Sawazaki's true position is quickly exposed. Zero and the Black Knights deduce that Sawazaki is not a free agent but a puppet of the Chinese Federation. The new Japan he proposes would, in reality, be a puppet state controlled by a foreign power, merely replacing one set of occupiers with another. Consequently, the Black Knights refuse to ally with him and instead join forces with the Britannian military to defeat his forces. This decision highlights Sawazaki's function in the plot as a foil to Zero; where Zero seeks genuine, if tumultuous, independence for the Japanese people, Sawazaki is willing to trade one master for another, representing the old-guard political maneuvering that Zero seeks to overthrow.
Key relationships define his brief appearance. He has a professional history with Genbu Kururugi, the late prime minister of Japan and father of Suzaku Kururugi. This connection becomes personally significant during the battle, as Sawazaki directly confronts Suzaku, trying to sway him by appealing to his father's dream of an independent Japan. His primary alliance is with General Tsao and the High Eunuchs of the Chinese Federation, who provide him with military force in exchange for influence over a resurrected Japan.
Sawazaki's development is limited, as he appears only in this single arc. He is established as a survivor who fled rather than fought, and his return is not driven by a pure patriotic spirit but by a calculated decision to seize power when the circumstances became favorable. His story arc concludes with his defeat and capture. After Zero and Suzaku Kururugi, piloting the Gawain and Lancelot respectively, successfully storm his headquarters, Sawazaki is apprehended by Britannian forces while attempting to flee back to the Chinese Federation. In terms of abilities, Sawazaki is a political figure rather than a combatant. His primary skills are political and strategic: forming a government-in-exile, negotiating for foreign military support, and making a calculated declaration to reclaim power. He has no personal combat abilities or special piloting skills, relying entirely on his Chinese Federation allies for military might. Supplementary materials later confirm that he was executed by the Britannian authorities for his actions.
