Description
Gino Weinberg is a character from the second season of the anime Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. He is a tall, blond-haired young man with blue eyes and a muscular build, often recognized by his three small braids. At seventeen years old, he holds the prestigious title of Knight of Three, the third-highest rank within the Holy Britannian Empire's elite Knight of the Round.
Born as the fourth son of the noble Weinberg family, Gino was not initially the focus of his family's attention. Despite his privileged upbringing in a distinguished household, he largely grew up away from his parents, raised by relatives on a branch line of the family. This background cultivated a strong sense of independence, and he achieved his high rank through personal skill and merit rather than relying solely on his family name. This drive for self-determination is a core part of his identity, setting him apart from many nobles who inherit their positions.
In direct contrast to many of his more stoic and reserved comrades, Gino possesses an energetic, outgoing, and optimistic personality. He is characterized by his cheerful demeanor, friendliness, and a genuine, if sometimes naive, curiosity about the world outside of aristocratic circles. This leads him to act in ways unbecoming of a typical noble, such as approaching others with casual, friendly physical gestures like hugs. While he initially looked down on the Number, a term for non-Britannians, for his origins as an honorary Britannian, this prejudice vanished after he lost a Knightmare Frame duel to Suzaku Kururugi; following the defeat, he made an active effort to become Suzaku's friend.
Throughout the story, Gino serves as a powerful ally of the Empire, participating in numerous military operations. He is part of the team sent to Area 11, where he engages the Black Knights and helps defend Governor Nunnally. He later travels to the Chinese Federation to assist in diplomatic and combat missions. Seeking to experience a normal life, he enrolls with his fellow knight Anya Alstreim at Ashford Academy and joins the student council. During this time, he develops a notable, competitive, and flirtatious rapport with Kallen Kozuki, the ace pilot of the Black Knights, expressing admiration for her strength and spirit even though she is his enemy on the battlefield. He also shows a compassionate side by intervening to stop the brutish Knight of Ten from harassing Kallen while she is a prisoner.
As the narrative reaches its climax, Gino's sense of justice and personal morals are put to the test. He strongly objects to a violent and destructive coup d'état planned by the second prince, Schneizel el Britannia, and is subsequently placed under house arrest for his refusal to participate. Later, when his former schoolmate and classmate Lelouch vi Britannia seizes the imperial throne and begins a tyrannical rule, Gino resolves to oppose him. He rejects the new empire and, in a critical turning point, joins forces with the Black Knights to fight against Lelouch and his own former friend, Suzaku. This decision is further galvanized by a personal tragedy, as his entire family is killed when the capital is struck by a devastating weapon of mass destruction.
Gino is a highly accomplished Knightmare Frame pilot. His primary personal machine is the Tristan, a distinctive and powerful frame capable of transforming between a humanoid Knightmare Mode and a high-speed jet-like Fortress Mode, allowing for exceptional mobility and tactical flexibility in combat. For the final battle against Lelouch's forces, his machine is recovered and upgraded into the Tristan Divider. In the final battle, he achieves the significant feat of destroying Lelouch's own personal Knightmare but is ultimately defeated by Suzaku, who spares his life. Following the war and Lelouch's death, Gino survives, loses his noble status with the dissolution of the aristocracy, but continues to live a full and adventurous life.
