TV-Series
Description
Mao is a young man from the Chinese Federation who was orphaned as a child. He never knew the love of parents or the difference between good and evil. At the age of six, he met C.C., who recognized his aptitude and bestowed upon him the power of Geass, also giving him the name Mao. The name had feminine connotations and was given because C.C. initially mistook him for a girl, though Mao grew fond of it and kept it. Over time, likely due to overuse, Mao's Geass ran out of control and became permanently active, leaving him unable to deactivate it. This constant influx of the thoughts of everyone around him drove him to a state of psychological instability and made it impossible for him to adapt to society. C.C. took him to live in a place far from other people and became the only person whose thoughts he could not hear. She became everything to him, more than family or a lover. However, after Mao developed an abnormally strong attachment to her, C.C. eventually abandoned him before he could fulfill his part of their contract. To cope with the overwhelming noise of others' minds, Mao relies on headphones that repeatedly play old recordings of C.C.'s voice, which help block out surrounding sounds and stabilize his mind.

Mao's personality is defined by emotional immaturity, a giddy and unpredictable mannerism, and a complete lack of empathy. Though he can maintain a somewhat reasonable persona in public, he clearly does not belong in crowds and is dangerously unpredictable. His Geass has made him socially dysfunctional, and his mental state is fragile and unstable. He is deeply obsessive and possessive when it comes to C.C., viewing her as the center of his existence. He is also a skilled manipulator, adept at exploiting the thoughts, fears, and guilt of others to influence their actions. Despite his instability, he is highly intelligent and capable of outmaneuvering even Lelouch through his ability to read minds, which neutralizes Lelouch's primary advantage of strategic intellect.

Mao's primary motivation is to reclaim C.C., who abandoned him. He sees Lelouch as a rival for her attention and becomes hostile toward him simply because Lelouch is close to C.C. He is not particularly critical of Lelouch's broader goals, and he even recognizes Lelouch's skills as a strategist and his determination to destroy Britannia. His schemes are entirely driven by his desire to separate C.C. from Lelouch and force her to return to him.

Mao serves as a recurring antagonist in the first season of the series. He deduces that the person behind the masked figure Zero must be C.C., and he travels to Area 11 to pursue her. He uses his Geass to spy on and manipulate those around Lelouch, attempting to expose his identity and break his resolve. He holds Nunnally hostage and forces Lelouch into a confrontation where his mind-reading ability gives him a clear advantage. His arc culminates in a direct confrontation where he is ultimately killed by C.C. herself, the very person he loved most.

The key relationship in Mao's life is with C.C. He views her as his entire world, and her abandonment left him unable to cope. In his mind, she was more than family or a lover; she was everything. The relationship between Mao and Lelouch is one of rivalry and antagonism, stemming from Mao's jealousy over Lelouch's connection to C.C. Mao's interactions with other characters are largely transactional, using his ability to read their thoughts to manipulate them for his own ends.

Mao's most notable ability is his Geass, known as the Soul's Reading. This power allows him to read the surface thoughts of anyone within a 500-meter radius, regardless of obstructions or eye contact. With concentration, he can extend this range further and delve deeper into a target's mind to uncover hidden thoughts. However, if he becomes distracted or overly focused on a single individual, he may overlook the thoughts of others. His Geass cannot retrieve information that has been forgotten, whether naturally or through the influence of another Geass. Because his Geass is permanently active and cannot be turned off, he must constantly hear the thoughts of those around him, which has contributed significantly to his deteriorating mental state. To manage this, he wears large headphones and dark-tinted sunglasses. He also demonstrates a degree of physical resilience, surviving multiple gunshot wounds, though this is partly attributed to the precise wording of the command given to the shooters.
