Description
Kousetsu Urabe, sometimes romanized as Kōsetsu Urabe, is a supporting character in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Tall and slender with short blue hair, gray eyes, and slightly tanned skin, he is a former soldier of the Japanese army who served under Lieutenant Colonel Kyoshiro Tohdoh during the war against the Holy Britannian Empire. After Japan's defeat and occupation, he followed Tohdoh into the Japan Liberation Front as one of its elite pilot corps known as the Four Holy Swords. In the Japan Liberation Front he wears a green military uniform, and later as a member of the Black Knights his pilot suit is dark blue.

Urabe's personality is defined by a calm, pragmatic loyalty. Among the Four Holy Swords he stands out as the one most willing to place his trust in Zero's leadership. He is serious and composed in combat but not without personal quirks; supplemental material notes that he enjoys unusual food combinations such as maple syrup on fried eggs and has a taste for unconventional ingredients like cicadas and dragonflies, and his cooking is described by comrades as oddly flavored though C.C. has praised his stew.

His core motivation is the liberation of Japan and a deep-seated loyalty to his comrades. He fights not for personal glory but to see Tohdoh's vision through and to support the cause Zero offers. When Tohdoh is captured after the Japan Liberation Front's collapse, Urabe and the other Four Holy Swords turn to the Black Knights and Zero to stage a rescue, piloting the newly supplied Gekka Knightmare Frames. Following the successful operation, he and his comrades join the Black Knights directly and continue to fight on the front lines. During the Black Rebellion, he served with distinction; after the rebellion's failure, he was one of the few high-ranking Black Knights to evade capture. Leading a detached unit, he went into hiding across Area 11 and spent the intervening months covertly safeguarding Kallen Kozuki and C.C. while laying the groundwork for Zero's return.

Key relationships define his path. Urabe operates as a trusted subordinate to Tohdoh, sharing a bond forged through years of combat that allows flawless team coordination. Within the Four Holy Swords he is a steady, dependable presence alongside Nagisa Chiba, Shougo Asahina, and Ryouga Senba. He develops a protective guardian role over Kallen and C.C. during the year after the Black Rebellion, securing supplies and planning their next move. His relationship with Zero is marked by an early and unwavering faith; Urabe was the first member of the Black Knights to discover Zero's true identity as a student, yet he never wavered, later declaring that Zero was their last hope.

Urabe's development culminates in the second season. After a long period of preparations, he executes Operation Hien 4 alongside Kallen to help a captured Zero regain his memories. In the ensuing Battle of Babel Tower, he sacrifices himself to shield Zero from enemy fire. With his final words he asserted that the Four Holy Swords were more than just a name, and his death serves as a testament to his complete commitment to the cause and to the man he believed would liberate Japan.

As for abilities, Urabe is an ace Knightmare Frame pilot whose skills far surpass the average resistance fighter. His experience from the original war against Britannia, combined with his membership in the elite Four Holy Swords, allows him to go toe-to-toe with Britannia's best, including Cornelia li Britannia's royal guard and even the Lancelot piloted by Suzaku Kururugi when working in coordination with his team. He typically operates mass-produced Knightmares like the Burai Custom and later the advanced Gekka units provided by Rakshata Chawla, using speed, precise teamwork, and tactical discipline to overcome superior opposition.
