Description
Euphemia li Britannia is a fictional character from the anime series Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. She is introduced as the Third Princess of the Holy Britannian Empire, making her a member of the imperial family and a half-sister to the series protagonist, Lelouch Lamperouge, as well as to his sister Nunnally. Physically, Euphemia is depicted as a beautiful young woman of sixteen years of age, standing approximately 170 to 172 centimeters tall, with long pink hair typically styled with two buns on the sides of her head and distinctive bluish-violet eyes.

Euphemia's personality stands in stark contrast to many of her ruthless and ambitious siblings. She is characterized by a kind-hearted, gentle, and open-minded nature, possessing an optimistic disposition and a genuine disdain for conflict. Unlike most Britannian nobles and royalty of her era, Euphemia holds no prejudice against the Japanese people, referred to by the empire as Elevens. She is deeply pained by the empire's discriminatory policies and is driven by a sincere desire for peace and equality between Britannians and the Japanese.

Her primary motivation throughout the story is to achieve peace through diplomacy and reform, believing that change must come from within the system. She arrives in Area 11, the conquered nation of Japan, to serve as its Sub-Viceroy alongside her beloved elder sister, Cornelia. Her role in the narrative is initially that of a compassionate but largely powerless symbol of the crown. However, she actively seeks to use her position to effect positive change. Her personal story becomes deeply intertwined with that of Suzaku Kururugi, a Japanese boy who becomes her official Knight. Their relationship evolves from mutual respect for their shared ideals into a genuine romantic bond, with Euphemia declaring her love for all parts of him, including his self-loathing.

Several key relationships define her character arc. Her bond with her half-brother Lelouch is particularly poignant; she was his first love in childhood and is the sibling he cared for most after Nunnally. She is one of the first people to deduce his secret identity as the masked revolutionary Zero, but she promises to keep it safe, hoping to reconcile with him. Euphemia also reconnects with Nunnally, whom she had believed to be dead, further solidifying her desire to create a world where her exiled siblings could live happily. Her relationship with Cornelia is one of admiration and sisterly protection, with Cornelia being fiercely protective of her idealistic younger sibling.

Euphemia's most significant act in the story is the surprise announcement of the establishment of the Special Administrative Zone of Japan, a designated region where Japanese people would be granted their national name and equal rights under Britannian rule. This plan, which she believed would peacefully end the conflict and provide a haven for Lelouch and Nunnally, put her in direct political opposition to Zero and the Black Knights. Ultimately, a tragic and uncontrollable turn of events leads to Lelouch's Geass power activating accidentally on her, compelling her against her will to order a massacre of the Japanese people she sought to protect. This event earns her the infamous epithet of the Massacre Princess. To end the chaos, Zero fatally shoots her. In her final moments, she demonstrates incredible willpower by momentarily fighting off the Geass's influence, dying in Suzaku's arms, unaware that her peace plan had failed.

Her development is tragically cut short, but her death has a profound and lasting impact on the series. Suzaku becomes consumed by a desire for revenge against Zero, while her memory serves as a martyr. Her vision for the Special Zone is later taken up by her half-sister, Nunnally. Regarding notable abilities, Euphemia possesses no supernatural powers like Geass but is highly perceptive and possesses strong deductive reasoning skills, which allow her to deduce Lelouch's secret identity. While she despises combat, she is capable of piloting a Knightmare Frame, a giant war machine, in emergencies. Her most remarkable ability is her profound empathy and her capacity to inspire loyalty and love in those around her, including Suzaku and even the cynical Lelouch, who admits she was his first love.
