Description
Kakuzu is a fictional character from the Japanese manga and anime series Naruto Shippūden. He was originally an elite ninja from Takigakure, the Hidden Waterfall Village, before becoming a rogue member of the criminal organization Akatsuki. At the time of his death in the story, he was ninety-one years old, though his lifespan was unnaturally extended by his unique abilities.
Kakuzu’s transformation into a wandering criminal began with a mission he was ordered to carry out by his village’s elders. In the early days when ninja villages were being established, Takigakure tasked him with assassinating Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage. The mission was a catastrophic failure; Hashirama’s legendary Wood Release techniques were far too powerful, and Kakuzu barely escaped with his life. Upon returning to his village, instead of understanding, he was met with severe punishment and disgrace for failing the mission. Consumed by a deep and bitter hatred for the village he had risked his life for, Kakuzu broke out of prison. Before fleeing, he took his revenge by stealing Takigakure’s most treasured forbidden jutsu and using it to kill the very elders who had condemned him.
The stolen technique, known as Earth Grudge Fear, fundamentally changed Kakuzu’s body. It allowed him to manipulate a system of black, thread-like tentacles inside him to steal and transplant the hearts of other ninjas. By doing this, Kakuzu could extend his own life indefinitely, effectively granting him a form of immortality. He could hold up to five hearts at once, which meant he had to be killed five times in a single battle for him to truly die. Each stolen heart also carried the original owner’s chakra nature, giving him the rare and powerful ability to use all five basic elemental transformations: Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth, and Water. These hearts could also be externalized as mask-covered monsters that fought alongside him, each capable of casting powerful, large-scale elemental ninjutsu.
Kakuzu’s personality was defined by a cold, calculating pragmatism and an obsessive fixation on money. He operated on a strict, transactional worldview where everything had a price. This obsession was not merely greed but a core part of his survival, viewing money as the most reliable and tangible asset in a world that had betrayed him. His favorite phrase was that preparation is key, and he had little patience for the reckless or the impractical. This put him in constant conflict with his partner in the Akatsuki, Hidan, an aggressive and fanatical warrior who cared nothing for finances. Despite their constant bickering, which often involved Kakuzu threatening to kill Hidan over his debts, their combat abilities complemented each other; Kakuzu’s long-range elemental blasts paired with Hidan’s close-range melee attacks and ritualistic curse made them a notoriously deadly duo.
Within the Akatsuki, Kakuzu held the ring on the left middle finger and was assigned the codename North. Unlike other members who were driven by ideology or grand plans for the world, Kakuzu saw his membership as purely a business arrangement. The organization provided a steady stream of high-value missions, bounties, and opportunities to fight powerful ninjas whose hearts he could harvest. His primary motivations were twofold: to sustain his immortality by continually acquiring new hearts and to accumulate as much wealth as possible to finance his endless existence.
In the story’s narrative, Kakuzu played a central role as an antagonist during the Akatsuki Suppression Mission arc. Alongside Hidan, he attacked the Hidden Leaf Village’s allies to hunt the tailed beast known as the Two-Tails. This mission led to a confrontation with Team 10, consisting of Shikamaru, Ino, and Choji, led by their sensei, Asuma Sarutobi. During the fierce battle, Kakuzu’s overwhelming power and his ability to regenerate any wound that did not destroy a heart proved too much for them, resulting in Asuma’s death. This event became a major turning point for Shikamaru, driving him to mature and meticulously plan a counterattack.
Kakuzu’s final fight brought together several of the series’ main characters. The combined efforts of Team 7, which included Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, and Sai, along with Kakashi Hatake and the revived Team 10, were required to defeat him. Shikamaru used his brilliant tactical mind to isolate and destroy one of Kakuzu’s hearts using Hidan’s own cursed technique. Kakashi then destroyed another with his Lightning Cutter. The battle culminated in the debut of Naruto’s new, incredibly powerful jutsu, the Wind Release Rasenshuriken, which annihilated two more of Kakuzu’s hearts simultaneously. With only one remaining, a weakened Kakuzu was finally put down by Kakashi. His refusal to join the Akatsuki for ideological reasons was proven final; for all his experience and power, he was ultimately defeated by the bonds of teamwork and revenge that he had long dismissed as worthless.
Kakuzu’s role in the story did not end with his death. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, he was resurrected by Kabuto Yakushi using the Impure World Reincarnation technique. Brought back as an immortal soldier, he was forced to fight against the Allied Shinobi Forces. Unlike in life, where his free will and pragmatism directed his actions, as a reincarnated soul he was a puppet. He was eventually subdued in battle, and his soul was finally released to ascend to the afterlife when the reincarnation technique was dispelled by the Akatsuki member Itachi Uchiha.
