Description
Maki is a kunoichi, or female ninja, from Sunagakure, the Village Hidden in the Sand, who holds the rank of Jonin. As a child, she lost her parents to shinobi from Kirigakure, the Village Hidden in the Mist, an event that fueled her initial desire to become a ninja and seek revenge. She became a dedicated student of Pakura, a renowned Sunagakure ninja famous for her Scorch Release kekkei genkai. Maki was persistent in her training, often pestering her teacher to practice with her.
Maki is characterized by her composed and collected demeanor, but beneath this calm exterior lies a tenacious and driven individual. She holds her master, Pakura, in the highest regard, showing deep respect for her legacy. Her personality also demonstrates a capacity for growth, moving beyond the bitterness she once harbored toward Kirigakure. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, she expresses hope that the alliance can herald a new era of cooperation between their villages.
In the story, Maki first appears as part of the Sunagakure rescue team, led by Temari, sent to aid in retrieving the captured Kazekage, Gaara, from the Akatsuki. Her most significant role occurs during the Fourth Shinobi World War, where she is placed in the Third Division under the command of Kakashi Hatake. Her primary function within this division is as a member of the sealing corps, a crucial role in countering the reincarnated shinobi.
Maki’s most defining relationship is with her teacher, Pakura. When Pakura is reincarnated by the Edo Tensei technique, Maki is forced to confront her. In their battle, Maki learns the tragic truth that Sunagakure's own leaders betrayed and ambushed Pakura, leading to her death. Despite this painful revelation, Maki works to quell Pakura's anger and change her mind, ultimately earning her teacher's recognition once more. During this fight, she also cooperates with Ruka, a kunoichi from Kirigakure, helping to forge an understanding between them. This experience helps Maki let go of her own past goal of revenge.
Maki’s character develops from a child seeking vengeance to a mature shinobi who prioritizes protecting her village's legacy and fostering inter-village unity. Her confrontation with Pakura forces her to reexamine her beliefs, and she successfully moves past the hatred she felt for Kirigakure, symbolizing a broader theme of reconciliation in the series. In later years, she appears in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, joining another Sunagakure kunoichi, Matsuri, in an operation to rescue Temari and Shikadai.
Maki specializes in unique cloth-based techniques. Her signature ability is the Cloth Binding Technique, a Sunagakure sealing method that involves wrapping an enemy in cloth and applying a sealing tag to completely immobilize them. She demonstrates this technique during the war to help seal the reincarnated Zabuza Momochi. She also possesses the Cloth Concealment Technique, using cloth to surround herself or allies to transfer them away from danger, effectively evading enemy attacks. Her proficiency in these skills makes her a valuable asset to the Allied Shinobi Forces.
