Description
Madara Uchiwa is a central figure in the world of Naruto Shippuden, known as the legendary leader of the Uchiwa clan and a reincarnation of Indra Otsutsuki. He was born during the Warring States Period, a time of constant conflict between shinobi clans, and grew up as the eldest son of Tajima Uchiwa. From an early age, Madara displayed exceptional talent in combat and a natural affinity for the Sharingan, the dojutsu unique to his clan. He had several brothers who died in battle, leaving only his younger brother Izuna as his close companion. The two trained rigorously together, pushing each other to new heights, and both eventually awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan. After Izuna was mortally wounded in a fight with Tobirama Senju, he gave his eyes to Madara to preserve the clans strength, granting Madara the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and cementing his power as the clans leader.
Madaras personality is defined by immense pride, confidence, and a ruthless determination. He is calculating and cautious, often using strategies such as shadow clones to avoid being caught off guard, yet he is also arrogant and domineering, viewing most others as inferior. His worldview was shaped by the endless cycles of violence he experienced, which led him to become cynical and disillusioned with the possibility of true peace. After the death of his brother and the betrayal he felt from his own clan and village, he grew increasingly bitter and vengeful. Despite these dark traits, Madara deeply loved his brother and once shared a dream of peace with another person.
Motivations drive much of the story. Madara ultimately seeks to end all conflict and suffering by casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that would trap all of humanity in an eternal dream where everyone could live in a perfect, peaceful illusion. He genuinely believes this is the only way to save the world from the endless cycle of hatred. However, he is unaware that this plan would actually turn humanity into lifeless husks, serving the will of Kaguya Otsutsuki.
Madaras role in the story is that of a mastermind behind many of the series key events. For most of the narrative, he works from the shadows, manipulating Obito Uchiwa to carry out his plans and founding the organization Akatsuki as a tool to collect the tailed beasts. He is long believed to have died in battle against Hashirama Senju at the Valley of the End, but he secretly survived using the Izanagi technique and lived into old age, connected to the Gedo Statue to sustain his life. He later dies but is reanimated during the Fourth Shinobi World War by Kabuto Yakushi, providing a direct and overwhelming threat to the Allied Shinobi Forces. After being revived fully, he becomes the jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails, attaining near-godlike power and ultimately seeking to fulfill his vision.
Key relationships define his arc. His bond with Hashirama Senju is the most significant, beginning as a childhood friendship built on a shared desire for peace, but descending into rivalry as their clans conflicted and their ideologies diverged. Despite this, Madara never fully loses his respect for Hashirama, and they reconcile in their final moments. His brother Izuna is another crucial figure, as his death and sacrifice gave Madara the Eternal Mangekyo and deepened his sense of loss. Madara also acts as a mentor and manipulator of Obito Uchiwa, grooming him to be his successor in the Moon Eye Plan. Lastly, he is unknowingly used as a pawn by Black Zetsu, who manipulated him into reviving Kaguya, a truth that leads to his ultimate betrayal.
Character development is evident in Madaras journey from a war-weary youth with hopes for peace to a bitter old man willing to impose his will on the entire world. After his reanimation and eventual resurrection, he grows even more powerful and unyielding, though he does experience a moment of reflection when he speaks with Hashirama before being defeated. In the end, he dies acknowledging that Hashirama was on the right path.
Notable abilities make Madara one of the most fearsome shinobi in history. He possesses the Sharingan, Mangekyo Sharingan, Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, and later awakens the Rinnegan by combining Hashiramas DNA with his own. His Rinnegan allows him techniques such as Limbo, which creates invisible, intangible clones that exist in a separate dimension, and Tengai Shinsei, a technique that pulls massive meteors from the sky. He can summon the Gedo Statue, control the Nine-Tailed Fox, and use the Susanoo, a colossal chakra construct that in his case is colored blue. He masters the Five Nature Transformations as well as Yin, Yang, Yin-Yang, Storm, and Wood Release. After becoming the Ten-Tails jinchuriki, he gains Truth-Seeking Orbs that can disintegrate nearly anything, flight, immense regeneration, and the Rinne Sharingan, which he uses to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi directly onto the moon. His combat prowess is supported by incredible taijutsu skill, a relentless battle intellect, and countless fire-based ninjutsu forms.
