Description
Hagoromo Otsutsuki, widely known as the Sage of Six Paths, is a legendary deified figure in the lore of the ninja world. He is recognized as the founder of ninshu, the philosophical and spiritual precursor to modern ninjutsu, and is regarded as the ancestor of all shinobi. He was born as the son of Princess Kaguya Otsutsuki alongside his twin brother, Hamura, making him one of the first humans to be born with chakra inherited from his mother. After Kaguya merged with the Divine Tree to become the rampaging Ten-Tails, Hagoromo and his brother fought and defeated the beast. To contain its immense power, Hagoromo sealed the Ten-Tails within his own body, becoming the first jinchuriki.
His primary motivation was to establish peace in a world torn apart by constant conflict. In his youth, after sealing his mother and the Ten-Tails, he traveled the land. He sought to connect people not through force, but by sharing chakra and teaching ninshu, a creed intended to foster understanding and harmony among individuals. Despite his divine power, Hagoromo is portrayed as a deeply wise, humble, and compassionate individual. He is patient and thoughtful, remaining calm even in the face of emotional outbursts from others. He carries a profound sense of regret for his failings as a father and leader, openly acknowledging the mistakes he made that led to the eternal conflict between his two sons.
In the story, Hagoromo plays a crucial role long after his physical death, as his chakra and consciousness persisted across centuries. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, he appears from the afterlife within the mental realm to intervene in the final conflict. He gives half of his power to Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, bestowing upon them the Six Paths Yang Power and Six Paths Yin Power respectively. This act grants them the strength needed to combat the resurrected Kaguya and Madara Uchiha. After Kaguya is sealed, he and the previous kage assist in retrieving Team 7 and the tailed beasts from another dimension, before finally passing on and allowing his spirit to dissipate.
His relationships are central to his character and the history of the ninja world. His relationship with his mother, Kaguya, is tragic; he loved her but was forced to seal her away to stop her tyranny. He shares a strong bond with his brother Hamura, working with him to save the world. His most impactful relationships are with his two sons, Indra and Asura. Hagoromo loved both equally, but ultimately chose Asura as his successor because he believed Asura's philosophy of love, cooperation, and relying on others was the true path to peace. This decision, manipulated by the entity Black Zetsu, led Indra to rebel, sparking a millennia-long cycle of reincarnation and war between their descendants, the Uchiha and Senju clans. He also showed deep care for the Ten-Tails' chakra, splitting it into the nine Tailed Beasts and giving each a name and identity, treating them with a fatherly kindness they never forgot.
His development is largely static as a legendary spirit, but his understanding of his own legacy deepens. He spent the centuries after his death observing the world, watching his sons' descendants perpetuate the cycle of hatred he inadvertently helped create. His intervention in the modern era is born from a desire to finally end this conflict and atone for his past mistakes. He entrusts the future not to a single chosen successor, but to the bond between Naruto and Sasuke, representing the union of the paths of Asura and Indra.
Notable abilities of Hagoromo are immense and god-like. As the original jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails, he possessed vast, incomprehensible chakra. He wielded the Rinnegan, the most powerful of the Three Great Dojutsu, granting him mastery over all chakra natures and access to the Six Paths techniques. He could manipulate gravity, summon creatures, absorb any ninjutsu, read minds, and control life and death. He also wielded the Creation of All Things technique, which used Yin-Yang Release to give form to imagination and life to form. He used this to split the chakra of the Ten-Tails into the nine Beasts. As the progenitor of ninshu, he possessed absolute mastery over chakra and could manifest Truth-Seeker Orbs, spheres of malleable black chakra capable of nullifying all ninjutsu and inflicting immense damage. He also left behind five legendary Treasured Tools, which possess unique sealing and elemental powers.
