Description
Makoto Kino, known as Sailor Jupiter, is a central character in the fourth season of the anime, Sailor Moon SuperS. She is a tall, strong-willed teenage girl who transfers to Juuban Middle School amid rumors of being a delinquent, a reputation that stems from her tendency to defend others with her fists. In truth, Makoto is warm-hearted and deeply nurturing, balancing her physical toughness with a love for traditionally feminine pursuits such as cooking, baking, gardening, and flower arranging. Her parents died in a plane crash when she was young, forcing her to live alone and become self-reliant. This independence, combined with her height and strength, often intimidates others, but her genuine kindness and loyalty quickly win over friends.

As Sailor Jupiter, she is the guardian of protection and courage, commanding powers over lightning, thunder, and plant life. Her primary attacks include Supreme Thunder, which summons a bolt of lightning, and Sparking Wide Pressure, a concentrated electrical blast. In SuperS, she receives a power upgrade from Pegasus, becoming Super Sailor Jupiter. This new form grants her the Jupiter Oak Evolution, a technique that unleashes a storm of sharp oak leaves. Her costume changes to include a star on her choker and an enlarged back bow, reflecting her enhanced abilities.

Makoto’s role in SuperS remains that of a steadfast protector. She fights alongside Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon), Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury), Rei Hino (Sailor Mars), Minako Aino (Sailor Venus), and Chibiusa (Sailor Chibi Moon) against the Dead Moon Circus. Her immense physical strength makes her the heaviest hitter among the inner guardians, and she often takes charge in melee combat. She is also fiercely protective of her friends, especially Usagi and Chibiusa, and does not hesitate to put herself in danger for their sake.

Her personal motivations are twofold: she longs to find true love and dreams of one day owning a combined flower and cake shop. Throughout SuperS, she continues to grapple with her past heartbreak over an older senpai who left her, which makes her susceptible to flattery and romantic gestures. This vulnerability is a recurring source of both humor and growth, as she learns to value her friends’ bonds over fleeting crushes. Her key relationships deepen with the other senshi, particularly Minako, with whom she shares a boy-crazy streak, and Ami, who appreciates her gentle side.

Makoto’s development in SuperS is subtle but meaningful. She becomes more comfortable with her dual nature, accepting that her strength and domesticity are not contradictory. Her courage is tested repeatedly, and she emerges as a reliable, maternal figure within the group. Notable abilities beyond her elemental attacks include expert martial arts skills, superhuman lifting power, and a keen intuition for sensing storms and electrical disturbances. Her iconic pink rose earrings remain a consistent detail in both civilian and sailor forms, symbolizing her blend of grace and power.
