Description
Rei Hino, sometimes written as Rai Hino, is the civilian identity of the Sailor Guardian Sailor Mars, the character referenced in some localizations under names such as Marinera Mart or Sailor Marte. In Sailor Moon SuperS she is one of the Inner Sailor Guardians who continue to fight alongside Sailor Moon during the conflict with the Dead Moon Circus, a dark organization that hunts the dreams of innocent people in search of the mystical Pegasus known as Helios.
Rei is a teenage student who lives with her grandfather at the Hikawa Shrine, where she serves as a miko, a shrine maiden. Her mother died when she was young, and her father is a prominent politician who is largely absent from her life, a situation that contributed to her distrust of men and her independent nature. She attends the T.A. Private Girls School, where she is popular and academically strong. Her connection to the shrine is central to her identity, and she takes her spiritual duties seriously, including early morning meditation, purification rituals, and the use of ofuda talismans to drive away evil spirits. Her lifelong goal is to become a head priestess, and much of her personality is shaped by this devotion to tradition and spiritual discipline.
In the anime, Rei has a fiery and direct personality. She is hot-tempered, outspoken, and sometimes vain, and she frequently quarrels with Usagi Tsukino over small matters. Despite these constant bickering matches, the two are deeply loyal friends, and Rei has a strong protective instinct toward Usagi. Rei is also disciplined, practical, and highly capable in a crisis. In this version of the story she differs from her more reserved manga counterpart by being interested in popular culture, capable of composing music, and generally behaving like a spirited teenager while still remaining serious about her responsibilities as a guardian and priestess.
Her motivation in SuperS is to protect the people she cares about and to stop the Dead Moon Circus from stealing dreams and spreading suffering. Because the season places special emphasis on dreams and inner desires, Rei faces a personal trial when the villains confront her with a mirror reflection of her younger self that taunts her about her friendships and her chosen path of becoming a priestess, suggesting that true happiness could only come from marriage to a wealthy man. Rei overcomes this illusion, and in doing so she recovers her Sailor Crystal, gaining the memory that she once made a vow to Princess Serenity in a past life. Afterward she is at peace with her lack of interest in romance and her dedication to her spiritual calling. This marks a significant development for her character, as it resolves the doubts she had carried about her future.
Within the team, Rei works closely with the other Inner Guardians, especially Usagi and Minako Aino. Her relationship with Minako involves friendly rivalry and mutual respect, and the two often compete while remaining supportive of each other. She also has a warm, complicated bond with Yuuichirou Kumada, her grandfather's apprentice, toward whom she shows occasional affection despite her general wariness of boys. Within SuperS she is present for the major battles against the Amazon Trio, the Amazoness Quartet, and Queen Nehelenia, contributing her fire-based combat power and her spiritual perception to the group's efforts.
Rei's notable abilities come from her element of fire and her psychic gifts. As Sailor Mars she can generate and control flames, using attacks such as Fire Soul and Burning Mandala to strike enemies from a distance. She also wields ofuda talismans, charging them with a chant known as Akuryou Taisan to exorcise, repel, or immobilize hostile beings. As a shrine maiden she possesses clairvoyant powers, including premonitory visions and the ability to read the future in flames, and she can sense the presence of evil even in her civilian form. In SuperS she undergoes an upgrade into Super Sailor Mars, a more powerful form that gives her the Mars Crystal and access to a new attack called Mars Flame Sniper, through which she launches an arrow of fire at her enemies using a bow formed of energy. She also participates in combined Guardian techniques when the Inner Sailor Guardians pool their powers. Her blend of spiritual sensitivity, tactical discipline, and aggressive fire-based fighting makes her an essential member of the team throughout the season.
