Description
Chibi Usa, whose full name is Usagi Tsukino although she prefers her nickname meaning "Small Rabbit," is the future daughter of Usagi and Mamoru from the 30th-century Crystal Tokyo. She travels back in time to the present day, initially appearing during the events of Sailor Moon R, and becomes a central figure in the storyline of Sailor Moon SuperS, where she takes on the role of the deuteragonist. In the North American adaptations, her civilian name was changed to Rini.
Chibi Usa is typically an energetic, extroverted, and outgoing child, though her personality is also marked by a strong-willed and often bratty demeanor, especially in her early appearances. She possesses a deep, secret admiration for her past mother, Usagi, despite their constant bickering and rivalry, which often resembles a sibling relationship more than a maternal one. A significant and recurring source of comedy and conflict is Chibi Usa's oddly strong attachment to Mamoru, her future father, which frequently provokes Usagi's jealousy. Underneath her sometimes-hostile exterior, she has a good heart and genuinely cares for those around her, even if she struggles to express it.
Her primary motivation throughout the series is her dream to become a true lady and a brave, independent perfectionist, much like her future self. She initially traveled to the past to obtain the Silver Crystal to save her mother, Neo Queen Serenity. In SuperS, her role becomes even more critical as she is the human chosen by the mystical Pegasus, Helios, to be his confidant. He contacts her through a crystal ball in her room, and she becomes the key to helping the Sailor Guardians fight the Dead Moon Circus, ultimately playing a significant role in saving Pegasus and defeating Queen Nehelenia.
In the SuperS season, Chibi Usa's relationships are central to the plot. Her bond with Pegasus, who provides her with guidance and power, is a cornerstone of the story. Her friendship with Hotaru Tomoe, the future Sailor Saturn, is also a key relationship, as Chibi Usa becomes the first person to befriend the lonely Hotaru, giving her the companionship she always wanted. While her rivalry and jealous fights with Usagi continue, their mutual love is undeniable, with Usagi becoming fiercely protective, going "full mama bear" if anyone threatens her. Her relationship with the other Sailor Guardians also deepens, particularly with Setsuna, Sailor Pluto, who acts as a caretaker.
Throughout the anime, Chibi Usa undergoes significant character development. She evolves from a spoiled, hostile, and at times antagonistic figure in her debut to a more mature and level-headed individual by the time of Sailor Moon SuperS and beyond. Although some fan criticism notes that her prominent role in SuperS shifted focus away from other characters, her growth as a Sailor Senshi and as a person is evident. She becomes less of a burden and more of a capable, if still learning, hero.
As a fighter, Chibi Usa is the civilian identity of Sailor Chibi Moon, a Sailor Guardian in training. Her abilities are generally less powerful than those of the older Senshi, and in the anime, her attacks are often portrayed as more comedic or distracting than destructive. However, she possesses unique and essential powers tied to her connection with Pegasus. Her notable abilities and items include transforming into Sailor Chibi Moon using her brooch. Her primary solo attack is Pink Sugar Heart Attack, which emits small heart-shaped fireworks from her Pink Moon Stick and is often ineffective for direct damage, serving mainly to distract enemies. In SuperS, she gains the power to transform into Super Sailor Chibi Moon with the phrase Moon Crisis, Make Up. She receives the Crystal Carillon from Pegasus, which allows her to summon him in battle by shouting Twinkle Yell. She also performs combination attacks with Sailor Moon, such as Double Rainbow Moon Heart Ache and, later, Moon Gorgeous Meditation using the Kaleido Moon Scope. By serving as the bridge to Pegasus, she enables Sailor Moon to access the power necessary to defeat the primary antagonists of the SuperS season.
