Description
Pegasus, whose true form and identity is Helios, is a central figure in the fourth anime season Sailor Moon SuperS. He is the high priest of Elysion, a sacred hidden realm that exists within the Earth and is closely tied to the planet's dreams and to the legacy of the ancient Golden Kingdom. Within Elysion, Helios serves as a guardian priest linked to Prince Endymion, the earthly counterpart to the Moon Kingdom's royal bloodline, and he is the keeper of the Golden Crystal, a legendary artifact associated with the power of dreams. In the waking world, Pegasus appears as a small white winged horse with a golden horn on his forehead, the horn being the visible vessel of the Golden Crystal, which gives him the combined traits of a pegasus and a unicorn.

Before the events of the season, Elysion was invaded by Queen Nehellenia and the forces of the Dead Moon Circus. Helios was captured, and while his physical body was imprisoned, his spirit was cast out and forced to wander. To survive and to seek help, he assumed the form of Pegasus and traveled to the surface world, where he could only appear inside the dreams of people who held especially beautiful and pure dreams. He eventually found refuge in the dreams of Chibiusa, the young girl who becomes Sailor Chibi Moon. Because he was separated from his body, his ability to act in the real world was limited, and he could only reach others through the dream realm, which forced him to keep his true identity and circumstances secret.

Helios is calm, gentle, and reserved, with a quiet and somewhat mysterious bearing that suits his role as a priest. He speaks thoughtfully and carries a strong sense of duty toward protecting Elysion, the Earth, and the dreams of humanity, which he regards as something precious and beautiful. Despite the weight of his mission, he is warm and patient with Chibiusa, and he opens up to her in ways he does not with anyone else. His feelings for her gradually grow from gratitude into a deep personal bond with clear romantic undertones, and this affection becomes one of the most important emotional threads of the season, at times placing his heart in tension with his responsibilities.

His primary motivation is to protect Elysion and the Golden Crystal from Queen Nehellenia, who seeks the crystal in order to break the curse that keeps her imprisoned and to gain immense power. He is also driven by the search for the maiden destined to save Elysion, the one who could release the Golden Crystal's power. He initially believes this maiden is Sailor Moon, but it is ultimately revealed that the figure who approaches him is Princess Lady Serenity, the future adult form of Chibiusa. He seeks Chibiusa's help because her pure dreams give him a place of refuge and because the light within her heart holds the key to breaking the seal on the crystal.

Pegasus acts as the hidden guide and benefactor of the Sailor Guardians during the SuperS story. He appears to them through dreams to request aid, and when the guardians are overwhelmed by the servants of the Dead Moon Circus, he lends them his power. Through the Golden Crystal, he enables Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon to access more powerful transformations and attacks, and he later grants the inner Sailor Guardians new weapons that allow them to achieve their Super forms and fight effectively. He provides the strength needed to combat the Lemures and other enemies sent by the Amazon Trio and the Amazoness Quartet, and the season builds steadily toward Nehellenia's attempt to tear the Golden Crystal from his horn. At the climax of the story, Nehellenia forces Pegasus out of Chibiusa's dream and back into his imprisoned human body, but Helios awakens and breaks free, taking part in the final battle. After Nehellenia is defeated, Elysion is restored, and Helios must return to his own world, parting from Chibiusa with the promise that he will not forget her.

His most important relationship is with Chibiusa. He comes to her in her dreams, and she becomes his trusted friend and confidante, keeping his existence a secret and believing in him even when others doubt him. He gives her a small crystal sphere called the Stallion Reve so that they can communicate outside the dream world, and through their many conversations Chibiusa matures and begins to understand her own feelings. When the inner guardians are initially suspicious of him, it is Chibiusa's faith that convinces them to accept his power. His relationship with Sailor Moon is one of alliance and mutual support, as she also fights to protect him from the Dead Moon. He also shares a meaningful connection with Mamoru Chiba, since Helios is the guardian priest of the prince associated with the Earth's ancient Golden Kingdom, and their fates are linked through the Golden Crystal.

Over the course of the season, Helios develops from a desperate and secretive figure into someone willing to trust and care openly for another person. In the beginning he hides his identity, his origins, and his purpose from Chibiusa, appearing only as a mysterious Pegasus in her dreams. As their bond strengthens, he becomes more vulnerable, showing her the ruined state of Elysion and explaining why he came to her. In the final episodes he acknowledges his feelings for her, and when he must leave, he expresses his gratitude and affection in a gentle farewell while Chibiusa vows to meet him again. His arc moves from isolation toward connection, as a guardian who finds renewed hope through the very person he was sent to save.

In his Pegasus form, Helios can fly and can project himself into the dreams of others, moving through the dream world and appearing before people whose dreams are pure and beautiful. He carries the Golden Crystal within his horn, a powerful artifact connected to the dreams of humanity and to the Earth itself, and he can share its power with the Sailor Guardians to grant them stronger transformations and devastating attacks. He is also able to create magical tools, including the Stallion Reve, which allows him and Chibiusa to speak across the boundary between dreams and waking life. For most of the story his physical body remains trapped in Elysion, so his influence in the real world is usually limited to the dream realm and to the power he lends to others, but once freed, he can stand beside the Sailor Guardians in direct combat. As the priest of Elysion, he embodies the protection of dreams, and with Nehellenia's defeat he returns to his role as the quiet guardian of the Earth's sacred inner world.
