Description
Lita Kino, known in the original Japanese as Makoto Kino, is the civilian identity of Sailor Jupiter, the fourth Sailor Guardian to join the team. She is introduced as a transfer student to Juuban Municipal Junior High School, where her taller than average stature, curly brown hair tied in a ponytail, and different school uniform immediately set her apart. Her long skirt and wavy hair were visual cues for a delinquent girl in 1990s Japan, and rumors follow her that she was expelled from her previous school for fighting. In reality, she is a gentle and deeply kind person who happens to possess remarkable physical strength. She wears rose shaped earrings and a green pom pom hair tie that carry through to her transformed state.
Lita lost both parents in a plane crash when she was young, leaving her to live alone in an apartment and care for herself. This loss contributes to her independence and her underlying loneliness. She is highly capable in all domestic areas, particularly cooking, baking, and gardening, and her dream is to one day get married and run a cake shop and a flower shop. She enjoys collecting cute fancy goods and takes great care in preparing homemade lunches and treats for her friends. Her domestic talents are a deliberate balance to her boyish mannerisms, and she speaks in a blunt, masculine tone typical of a tough girl, though she is often surprised and pleased when others point out her feminine qualities.
Despite her tough reputation, Lita is deeply romantic and quite boy crazy. She carries a strong attachment to an older upperclassman who once rejected her, and throughout the series she tends to fall for any man who reminds her of him, even in small ways. This leads to frequent short lived crushes and heartbreaks, most notably in the SuperS season where she is tricked by Tiger's Eye at a university dance party. She waits all night for a promised dance only to realize she has been deceived, but she eventually processes the disappointment by understanding that what she truly wanted was the dream of dancing itself.
Her role in the story is that of a protector and a powerhouse. She is fiercely loyal to her friends and quick to step in front of danger, often using her immense physical strength even before transforming. As Sailor Jupiter, she is the Guardian of Thunder and Courage, also referred to as the Guardian of Protection. Her signature attacks involve summoning and directing lightning through an antenna that extends from her tiara, with Supreme Thunder being her most well known technique. Over the course of the series she also develops Sparkling Wide Pressure and later, in her Super Sailor Jupiter form, Jupiter Oak Evolution. In combat she relies heavily on martial arts and hand to hand fighting, making her the most physically formidable of the inner Sailor Guardians.
Key relationships include her close friendship with Usagi Tsukino, who was the first person to see past Lita's intimidating exterior and accept her warmth. She also shares a strong bond with Ami Mizuno, with whom she often eats lunch and walks to school, and with Minako Aino, with whom she forms a boy crazy duo. She holds a respect and admiration for Haruka Tenoh, whose confidence and refusal to be constrained by gender roles resonates with her. Lita feels a kinship with Mamoru Chiba as they are both orphans, and she addresses him and Usagi by their first names without honorifics, reflecting her straightforward nature.
Throughout the SuperS season, Lita continues to grow in her confidence as a warrior and as a person. She obtains her Sailor Crystal and awakens to her Super Sailor Jupiter form, which grants her enhanced power and a new costume. Her development is marked by learning to value the dreams she holds for herself rather than seeking validation through romance alone, and by deepening her commitment to protecting her friends and the world. Her abilities extend beyond lightning to include control over wind and plants, though in the anime her flower based powers are rarely emphasized. She is known for her bravery, her willingness to sacrifice herself for others, and her enduring belief in the importance of love, friendship, and a home filled with warmth.
