Description
Para-Para, known as PallaPalla in the original Japanese version, is a character in the anime Sailor Moon SuperS, where she appears as one of the four members of the Amazoness Quartet, a group of youthful antagonists serving the Dead Moon Circus. The name Para Para is used in the English adaptation, while the Japanese name is drawn from Pallas, a reference to both the asteroid Pallas and the Greek goddess Pallas Athena. She has blue hair and a small, childlike appearance that matches the way she behaves.
In the story of SuperS, the Amazoness Quartet operates under Zirconia, who carries out the will of Queen Nehelenia. Their mission is to find Pegasus and obtain the Golden Crystal by searching through the dreams of people in Tokyo. Para-Para takes part in this mission alongside her fellow quartet members CereCere, JunJun, and VesVes. In the anime she is presented as the youngest of the four, although in the original manga her position among the sisters differs. Later in the story it is revealed that she and the other quartet members were originally Sailor Guardians, and that Para-Para is actually Sailor Pallas, one of the four protectors of Chibiusa. She was captured and manipulated by Queen Nehelenia to serve the Dead Moon Circus against her true nature, and she is eventually freed from that influence as the season resolves.
Her personality is defined by extreme childishness. She speaks about herself in the third person and behaves like a small, moody child, crying easily and acting on simple impulses. The creator of the series described her as a crybaby and childish, and she often displays tantrums and whims rather than mature reasoning. Despite her innocent appearance, she can be surprisingly clever, and she is capable of casual cruelty without any apparent distress; in one episode she tears the head off her own doll, treating the action as a simple cure for the doll's toothache. The combination of childlike behavior and unsettling indifference is a notable feature of her characterization, and other members of the quartet regard her as dangerous.
Her motivations are simple and playful rather than ideological. Like the rest of the quartet, she wants to find Pegasus because the girls wish to play with him, and when they get the chance they take Chibiusa and replace her with a doll for that purpose. She follows Zirconia's orders as a member of the circus organization, but her loyalty is shallow and driven largely by her own wishes. Her attacks cause real harm to the people whose dreams the circus targets, yet she shows little concern for the consequences, treating her role in the mission like a game.
As a fighter, Para-Para is a magic user who casts spells with her Amazon Stone, and she is associated with the role of the Magician of Balancing Balls. Her abilities center on ball-based attacks, and the lemures she summons, the monsters used by the Dead Moon Circus, often take on spherical forms. She also incorporates dolls into her tricks, though less frequently than balls, and she prefers to attack groups of people at once rather than fighting a single opponent.
Her most significant relationships are with the other members of the Amazoness Quartet, who function like her sisters, and with Zirconia, her superior, who has difficulty keeping the quartet fully under control. Her true connection, which becomes clear through the story's resolution, is to Chibiusa, since the Sailor Quartet, including Sailor Pallas, serves as Chibiusa's protectors. Over the course of SuperS, the quartet gradually develops sympathy for the Sailor Guardians, and Para-Para's loyalties begin to shift. In the season's conclusion, her awakened identity as Sailor Pallas restores her rightful place as a guardian, transforming her from a thoughtless antagonist into a redeemed figure while preserving her playful and childlike nature.
