Description
Kenichi Saruyama is a student at Sainan High School and a close friend and classmate of the protagonist, Rito Yuuki. He is easily recognized by his black, spiky hair and a face that has been described as resembling a monkey, a visual trait that aligns with the meaning of his family name, which contains the Japanese word for monkey. His physical statistics include a height of 166 centimeters and a weight of 66 kilograms, with a birthday that has been recorded as either March 6 or April 15 in different sources.

Personality wise, Saruyama is defined by his openly perverted nature and near-constant obsession with girls, a trait that surpasses most other characters in the series and is a primary source of comic relief. He is energetic, mischievous, and unafraid to concoct schemes, though his plans typically backfire spectacularly. He frequently attempts to peek at girls in hot springs or baths, often dragging a reluctant Rito along and then placing the blame solely on his friend if they are caught. Despite this overt lecherousness, he is also capable of interacting with his female classmates in a relatively normal manner and is not portrayed as a malicious individual. He struggles with early mornings and his bedroom is decorated with posters of bikini models, further cementing his nature.

Saruyama serves as a key supporting character, functioning as a confidant and a comedic foil to Rito. He is one of the few people who knows about Rito's long-standing crush on Haruna Sairenji and offers advice on the matter. A significant part of his motivation stems from intense jealousy; he envies Rito because the protagonist constantly finds himself in accidental romantic or embarrassing situations with a bevy of beautiful girls, including the alien princess Lala Satalin Deviluke. While Saruyama desires a girlfriend and pursues attractive women, his efforts are almost always met with failure, solidifying his role as a luckless underdog who rarely wins.

His most notable relationship is his friendship with Rito Yuuki, which began in junior high school. Despite his envy and tendency to get Rito into trouble, he demonstrates a degree of loyalty, showing concern for Rito's feelings and well-being. Another defining, albeit one-sided, relationship is with Riko Yuusaki, the female alter-ego Rito transforms into due to one of Lala's inventions. Saruyama is completely unaware of Riko's true identity and develops a genuine crush on her, going so far as to arrange a date with her, a fact that Rito finds deeply disturbing. He also has a playful but largely unsuccessful friendship with other male students and the school principal, with whom he occasionally collaborates in comedic pursuits of female attention.

In terms of character development, Kenichi Saruyama remains a largely static figure throughout the series. His role is consistent as a comedic element and a representation of an average, perverted high school boy who contrasts with the more fortunate Rito. While his appearances are frequent in the original To Love-Ru narrative, his presence becomes notably less central in the sequel series, To Love-Ru Darkness, where he fades more into the background. He does not possess any supernatural or special abilities, his skills lying instead in his talent for creating mischief and his persistence in pursuing his interests.
