Description
In the story of Daa! Daa! Daa!, the character referred to as Hosho Kiyama is consistently identified across multiple sources as Hosho Saionji, also known as Hokusho Saionji. He is the father of the male protagonist, Kanata Saionji, and lives with his son at the Saionji family temple. Hosho is a Buddhist monk and a widower, having lost his wife prior to the events of the narrative.

As a character, Hosho Saionji is portrayed as an eccentric and somewhat absent-minded monk. His personality is often described as that of a bumbling dad, which contributes to the chaotic and comedic situations that drive the plot forward. Despite his seeming carelessness, his actions are not driven by malice. His primary motivation appears to be his dedication to his religious calling. Upon learning that an old friend, the father of Miyu Kozuki, needs a place for his daughter to stay, Hosho readily agrees to house her at the temple. He arranges for Miyu to live with him and Kanata, fulfilling his role as a trusted family friend.

Hosho’s most critical role in the story is as the catalyst for the central premise. Shortly after Miyu arrives at the temple, he receives an invitation for a religious pilgrimage or training journey to India, which he decides to undertake immediately. This sudden departure leaves the two fourteen-year-old protagonists, Miyu and Kanata, alone to live together. His decision sets the stage for the series' core conflicts and relationships. By leaving, he unintentionally forces the two teenagers to become responsible for themselves, and soon after, for the alien baby Ruu and his pet-like caretaker, Wannya, who crash-land at the temple.

Hosho’s key relationships are limited but significant. His most important connection is with his son, Kanata. Kanata is depicted as being very self-sufficient and used to his father's eccentric and often absent behavior, suggesting that Hosho has been an unreliable guardian for some time. He is also a close friend of Miyu’s parents, which is why he was entrusted with her care. While not a major recurring character, his departure defines the life situation for the main cast. He does not possess any notable supernatural or extraordinary abilities; his defining trait is his role as the easily distracted and irresponsible patriarch whose decision to leave for India is the foundational event of the series.
