Description
Wannya, also known as Bow-Meow, is an alien being from the planet Otto who serves as a sitter pet, a type of caretaker specifically designed to look after infants. Wannya is a small, creature whose appearance resembles a cross between a cat and a dog, which is directly reflected in the name Wannya, a portmanteau of the Japanese words for "woof" and "meow". Wannya arrives on Earth alongside Ruu, a baby alien, after their UFO crash-lands at a shrine in Japan. Stranded until a rescue ship can arrive, Wannya and Ruu are taken in by the middle school students Miyu and Kanata, leading to a chaotic secret life together in one household.
Personality-wise, Wannya is diligent, responsible, and often serves as the most level-headed member of the makeshift family. Dedicated to the mission of caring for Ruu, whom Wannya addresses with the highly respectful and affectionate honorific "Ruu-chama," this alien takes its duties extremely seriously. It handles almost all of the domestic chores in the house, including cooking, cleaning, and managing daily tasks, with a sense of pride and efficiency. Despite this mature sense of responsibility, Wannya also possesses a more vulnerable and emotional side that emerges in specific situations. For instance, the character has been shown to feel forgotten or upset when events like birthdays are overlooked, including its own, which it does not even know.
The primary motivation for Wannya is the safety, happiness, and proper upbringing of Ruu. Every action is geared towards creating a stable and nurturing environment for the baby, even while stranded on an unfamiliar planet. This goal extends to protecting the secret of Ruu's and its own alien origins from the general public, a task that requires constant vigilance and creativity. A more personal, secondary motivation is a deep and passionate love for mitarashi dango, a type of Japanese dumpling covered in a sweet soy sauce glaze. This fondness for the Earth delicacy has become a significant personal joy and a recurring aspect of daily life.
Wannya's central role in the story is that of a caretaker and a secret-keeper. It is the primary guardian of Ruu, providing constant supervision and care. At the same time, it acts as a support system for Miyu and Kanata, relieving them of the more mundane chores and assisting them in the much more difficult task of hiding two extraterrestrial beings in their home. Wannya is also the source of many of the series' magical solutions and comedic complications, using its unique abilities to solve problems, often in unexpected or humorous ways.
The most significant relationship is with Ruu, the baby alien. The dynamic is one of absolute devotion and professional care from Wannya, who treats the infant with the utmost respect. Its relationship with the two human protagonists, Miyu and Kanata, is that of a cooperative roommate and fellow guardian. While initially a strange and surprising addition to their lives, Wannya quickly becomes an indispensable partner, handling the household and using its powers to maintain their unusual family unit's secret. The dynamic with the manga author character Mikan is also notable, as Wannya's preferred human transformation is a handsome young blond man, a form Mikan once developed a crush on, creating a running gag.
Throughout the narrative, Wannya shows little character transformation as it is already mature and competent from the start. Instead, its development is more about adaptation to Earth's culture, seen in its passion for dango and its increasing skill at navigating human society through its disguises. A significant moment of vulnerability is shown during an episode centered on its forgotten birthday, revealing that beneath its capable exterior, it has feelings that can be hurt and a desire for recognition and care from its found family.
Wannya possesses a remarkable and versatile set of abilities. Its primary power is shapeshifting, allowing it to transform into virtually anything, including animals and inanimate objects. It most frequently uses its ability to assume human forms for household errands and emergencies, with its standard human appearances including a tall, blond young man, a dark-red-haired woman, and even an elderly monk. Wannya can also change its size dramatically, from a very small form that can be carried on a bib to a giant size capable of breaking through enclosures. Beyond transformation, it uses a piece of advanced technology called the Mini-Mini Set, a device that can shrink objects to a portable size. Despite all these extraordinary powers, Wannya wears its most remarkable ability openly: being the competent, caring, and occasionally dramatic glue that holds this unconventional family together.
