Description
Miyu Kozuki is the main protagonist of the anime Daa! Daa! Daa!. She is an eighth-grade girl whose parents, both employed by NASA, move to the United States for work at the start of the series. She is sent to stay with a longtime family friend, Hosho Saionji, a Buddhist monk who lives in an old temple on a hill. Soon after her arrival, the monk departs on a year-long pilgrimage to India, leaving Miyu to live in the same house with his son, Kanata. Initially unhappy about sharing a home with a boy, Miyu frequently argues with Kanata. However, she later learns from her mother that she and Kanata were friends as toddlers, and over time her feelings shift from annoyance to genuine affection.

Miyu is characterized as a kind, generous, and motherly girl. She is cheerful and quick to smile, but also has a soft heart that is easily moved. While generally good-natured, she can become flustered or angry when embarrassed or confused. Despite her parents’ tendency to leave her behind due to their demanding careers—a pattern that has persisted since her childhood—Miyu remains friendly and optimistic, caring deeply about the people around her. Her primary motivation is to adapt to her unusual circumstances and take care of those she loves.

Her role in the story is central: when a UFO crashes into the temple’s main hall, she and Kanata discover an alien baby named Ruu and his cat-like babysitter, Wannya. Because the aliens cannot return to their home planet, Miyu and Kanata agree to care for them, and Ruu comes to view Miyu as his mother due to her resemblance to his own mother. Much of the series follows Miyu as she balances school, her growing relationship with Kanata, and the chaos caused by Ruu’s supernatural abilities, which he often uses at inappropriate times.

Key relationships include her deep bond with Kanata, which evolves from rivalry to mutual care and eventually to a romantic relationship. She also shares a strong maternal affection for Ruu and a loyal friendship with classmates such as Aya Konishi and Nanami Tenchi. For a time, she develops a brief crush on Mizuki Yamamura, the younger brother of a schoolmate. Her parents, though frequently absent, remain important figures in her life.

Throughout the series, Miyu’s character develops from a responsible but somewhat reluctant caretaker into a more adventurous and emotionally open young woman. She becomes more willing to take risks and ultimately forms a unique family unit with Kanata, Ruu, and Wannya. Years later, she marries Kanata and they continue to live at the temple, raising a daughter named Miu. Aside from her caring nature, Miyu has no special abilities; she is an ordinary girl who handles extraordinary circumstances with resilience and warmth.
