Description
Neku Sakuraba is a 15-year-old boy born and raised in Shibuya, distinguished by his spiky orange hair and blue eyes. Initially thin and pale, he exhibits intensely antisocial behavior, deeply distrusting others and constantly wearing headphones to block out external noise and human interaction. His isolation stems from unresolved trauma over the death of his only childhood friend in an accident, which he blamed on himself, leading him to believe connections cause only pain. He admires the graffiti artist CAT, finding solace in the motto of self-determination on CAT's Udagawa mural, and prefers traditional Japanese food like ramen while disliking muffins.

Unknowingly selected as a proxy by Joshua, the Composer of Shibuya, Neku was caught in crossfire near the CAT mural between Joshua and the Reaper Sho Minamimoto on the day of his death. Joshua killed him directly, erasing his memories as the entry fee for the Reapers' Game, thrusting him into the invisible Underground (UG). There, he must partner with others to complete missions and battle Noise monsters to survive. Secret Reports note his high but unstable Imagination, likely influenced by his emotional trauma.

Throughout the Game, Neku partners sequentially with Shiki Misaki, Joshua, and Beat, driving his development. Initially manipulated by a Reaper, he attempts to kill Shiki but stops before completion. Through Shiki, he confronts her appearance insecurities and affirms her worth, later showing devastation at the erasure of other players. With Joshua, he navigates distrust and cryptic challenges, while his partnership with Beat solidifies his loyalty. A key turning point comes when he refuses to shoot Joshua in their final duel, choosing trust over violence. This act convinces Joshua to spare Shibuya, stemming from Neku's realization that human connections and conflicts foster growth, rejecting Conductor Megumi Kitaniji's brainwashing plan as stagnation. He declines an offer to become the new Composer, prioritizing returning to life and reuniting with Shiki.

Neku's abilities center on "Psychs" activated through pins, granting powers like telekinesis, elemental attacks, energy manipulation, healing, invisibility, and teleportation. He demonstrates feats including levitating the moon with Joshua's aid and surviving extreme conditions like space vacuums. His Player Pin allows mind-scanning and mental imprinting, protecting him from brainwashing. His combat proficiency evolves, enabling him to defeat Reapers, Noise, and Game Masters.

In later events, Neku loses his negative traits entirely, becoming compassionate and open. He forgives Coco despite her trapping him in Shinjuku's void for three years, recognizing her intent to save the district. He intervenes to rescue Beat from corruption and helps prevent Shibuya's destruction by Dissonance. His appearance shifts to a hooded jacket and baggy pants, sans headphones. Relationships deepen, particularly with Shiki, where mutual support hints at romantic undertones, and Joshua, whom he reconciles with as a friend. The animation adaptation underscores his growth through details like the removal of his headphones.
