Description
Bal'ami Tytania is a young nobleman and a minor member of the ruling Tytania clan, the supreme ruling family of a vast interstellar empire. He is the son of Estolardo Tytania, the Marquis of Luttich, who is the step-brother of the current Clan Lord, Ajman Tytania. This makes Bal'ami a cousin to the four powerful dukes who command the clan's military might.
Bal'ami is introduced as an ambitious and somewhat factious youth, hungry for advancement and eager to prove himself within the rigid hierarchy of his family. Initially, he appears to embody the typical Tytanian arrogance and desire for power, urging his father to plan a coup against the Clan Lord, believing Estolardo would be a better ruler. However, his personality is tempered by experience, particularly when he is given responsibility over Princess Lydia, a voluntary hostage from the Kingdom of Elving. This assignment, delegated by his cousin Duke Jouslain, forces Bal'ami into a role akin to a caretaker or secretary, which serves to limit his opportunities for scheming and build his character.
His primary motivation is tied to his family's standing and his own ambition. He believes his father is more suited to lead the clan and chafes under the authority of the Clan Lord and the more powerful dukes. This desire to see his family rise in power is a key driver of his early actions. However, his motivations become more complex and personal following a family tragedy. When his father participates in a rebellion against the Tytania central government, Bal'ami desperately tries to warn him that the plot has been discovered, but his warnings are ignored. During the subsequent arrest by clan forces, a struggle ensues, and Estolardo is mortally wounded.
This event fundamentally alters Bal'ami's role and outlook. In the aftermath, Duke Jouslain arrives to offer condolences, but Bal'ami understands that Jouslain had been manipulating events from the shadows to crush the rebellion. His initial ambition curdles into a deep-seated hatred and resentment towards his cousin, and he becomes a potential threat within the family, a snake in the grass who may seek revenge for his father's death. His position is also complicated by his status; as a son of a disgraced rebel, he is effectively a hostage to the clan's goodwill, forced to demonstrate loyalty while harboring a desire for retribution.
Key relationships define his story. His relationship with his father, Estolardo, is central, as he both admires him and attempts to guide him away from a doomed conspiracy, only to fail tragically. His relationship with Duke Jouslain is the most significant and fraught. Jouslain acts as his superior, giving him tasks like managing Princess Lydia and gathering information, but also orchestrates the downfall of Bal'ami's father, creating a deep, secret enmity between them. His interactions with Princess Lydia, whom he is tasked with supervising, represent a more mundane and educational aspect of his life within the clan's inner circle.
Throughout the series, Bal'ami undergoes notable development, transitioning from a brash, scheming youth to a more calculating and resentful young man, shaped by tragedy and political betrayal. His initial eagerness to engage in power politics is replaced by a bitter understanding of the clan's ruthless nature. In terms of abilities, he is shown to be educated in the political and administrative workings of the Tytania empire, capable of handling correspondence and gathering intelligence for his cousin Jouslain. He possesses the typical demeanor of a Tytania noble, with a notable trait being that the color of his uniform changes during the course of the anime, for reasons that are not explained. He is physically described as a blonde-haired, gray-eyed youth.
