TV-Series
Description
Maylene is a maid in the Phantomhive household, employed under mysterious circumstances. She is a young woman with maroon-red hair typically tied in high pigtails and large round glasses that are cracked and ill-fitting. She stands 165 centimeters tall and is noted to be of Chinese descent. Despite her enthusiastic dedication to her duties, Maylene is exceptionally clumsy and inept at domestic chores, frequently breaking dishes, adding excessive soap to laundry, and tripping over herself. This clumsiness intensifies in the presence of the butler Sebastian Michaelis, for whom she harbors a strong romantic crush.

Her outward incompetence masks a hidden past as a highly skilled assassin. Before joining the Phantomhive staff, Maylene worked as a sniper for the Qing Bang, a Chinese criminal organization, and was tasked with assassinating Ciel Phantomhive. Her attempt was foiled by Sebastian, who instead recruited her to serve as a maid and, covertly, as a protector of the estate. Her exceptional far-sighted vision allows her to fire a sniper rifle without a scope, and she is physically capable of handling multiple firearms with remarkable speed and precision. She refuses to replace her cracked glasses because they were the first gift Ciel ever gave her, valuing their sentimental significance over their practicality.

Maylene’s personality is a blend of endearing giddiness and fierce loyalty. She is upbeat and easily flustered, often fawning over Sebastian, but she becomes completely focused and deadly serious when the household is threatened. Her motivations are rooted in gratitude and belonging: after a childhood spent as an orphaned street thief following her parents’ death from disease, the Phantomhive manor gave her a home and purpose. She is deeply devoted to Ciel and respects Sebastian as both a mentor and a figure of affection.

Her relationships with the other servants are warm and cooperative. She works alongside the cook Bardroy and the gardener Finnian, sharing a camaraderie as the unusual staff chosen for their hidden talents. She also has a close bond with Ran-Mao, another Chinese character, and the two have posed as sisters during missions. Maylene’s role in the story evolves from a purely comedic foil to a capable fighter who protects the manor during dangerous arcs, such as the Circus and Luxury Liner storylines. She demonstrates notable development by embracing her dual identity, learning to read with Sebastian’s help, and proving herself as both a reliable maid and a formidable guardian. Her abilities include masterful marksmanship, enhanced visual acuity, and proficiency with various firearms, though her domestic clumsiness remains a constant counterpoint.
