TV-Series
Description
Mey-Rin is the maid of the Phantomhive household. She is a young woman with hazel eyes and maroon-red hair that she usually wears tied in high pigtails. She is easily recognized by her large round glasses and a strong Chinese accent. She stands approximately 165 centimeters tall. Originally from China, she came to England with her father, a tea merchant who died of an infectious disease. Before joining the Phantomhive staff, she worked as an assassin and a sniper who did not need a scope due to her sharp far-sighted vision.

Her personality appears enthusiastic yet clumsy. She is extremely dedicated to her job, but her constant errors, such as adding too much soap to laundry, shattering dishes, and tripping over herself, make her seem incapable. When given important tasks, she stutters and panics, compounding her natural awkwardness. Her glasses are ill-fitting and do little to correct her vision, yet she refuses to replace them because they were the first thing Ciel Phantomhive bought for her. This detail reveals her deep sentimental attachment to the young master and her desire to hold onto a tangible token of his kindness.

Beneath this bumbling exterior lies a former professional killer. Her motivations are rooted in gratitude and loyalty. Sebastian Michaelis recruited her after she failed to assassinate Ciel, offering her a new life as a maid. She accepted and now dedicates herself wholly to protecting the Phantomhive estate and serving its master. Her admiration for Sebastian is particularly strong; she becomes even more flustered in his presence, and her clumsiness intensifies when he watches her work.

In the story, Mey-Rin is one of the three main servants alongside Baldroy and Finnian. While her day‑to‑day role is that of a maid, she occasionally acts as a combat asset. During dangerous missions, her true skills emerge: she can wield a sniper rifle as easily as a handgun, load hundreds of rounds quickly to minimize reload time, and hit targets with precision despite her thick glasses. Her hidden abilities provide a sharp contrast to her domestic persona and often surprise both allies and enemies.

Her key relationships revolve around the Phantomhive household. She is deeply loyal to Ciel Phantomhive, viewing him as her master and protector. Her feelings for Sebastian are a mix of admiration and infatuation, which creates many humorous moments. She is also close with her fellow servants, particularly Baldroy and Finnian, with whom she forms a tight‑knit trio. Their camaraderie balances her moments of insecurity.

Throughout the series, Mey-Rin’s character develops from a purely comedic maid into a more layered figure. Her assassin backstory is revealed in episode 21 of the anime and chapter 33 of the manga, adding depth to her seemingly simple role. This revelation does not erase her clumsiness; rather, it reframes her behavior as a carefully maintained disguise and a genuine part of her personality. She learns to reconcile her violent past with her desire for a peaceful domestic life, showing growth in self‑acceptance and confidence.

Her abilities are formidable. She possesses exceptional marksmanship, physical fitness that allows her to handle heavy firearms with ease, and an extraordinary visual acuity that compensates for her glasses. Her main weakness remains her clumsiness, which often undermines her combat effectiveness in everyday situations. Nevertheless, when the need arises, she can shed her maid persona and act as a deadly sniper, serving as a valuable protector of the Phantomhive household.
