Description
Meirin is a young woman of Chinese origin who serves as the housemaid for the Phantomhive household. She is 165 centimeters tall and has straight, maroon-red hair, typically styled into high pigtails, with hazel eyes. Her appearance is marked by a pair of large, thick round glasses, a gift from her master, Ciel Phantomhive. While these glasses give her a clumsy and distracted air, they are intended to correct her severe farsightedness, which makes it difficult for her to see objects up close.
Despite her bumbling exterior, Meirin hides a lethal past as a professional sniper. As a child, she traveled to England from China with her parents on a tea clipper, but after they died in an epidemic, she was left to survive as a street urchin in London. To survive, she and two other Chinese orphans would steal jewelry from wealthy women using her extraordinary eyesight and a slingshot. This life ended when they inadvertently targeted a woman associated with the Chinese mafia, the Qing Bang. Her companions were killed, and she was forcibly recruited into the organization, becoming a feared assassin known only by her codename, Owl, serving them for roughly a decade.
Her life took a pivotal turn when she was ordered to assassinate Ciel Phantomhive, who had become an obstacle to the mafia's operations. After carefully surveilling the manor, she took her shot, but Sebastian Michaelis, the demon butler, deflected the bullet with a silver kettle. She was swiftly captured, and Sebastian, recognizing her unique talent and the household's need for staff, offered her a choice: face certain death at the hands of her former employers or begin a new life as a maid. She chose the latter, a decision solidified when Ciel and Sebastian offered her the first proper meal she had had in years.
In her role as a maid, Meirin is notoriously accident-prone, frequently breaking dishes, misreading instructions, or tripping over her own feet. This clumsiness is a direct result of her extreme farsightedness, as the glasses that help her see at a distance are not properly suited for the close-up work required for housekeeping. However, when the manor is threatened, she sheds her timid persona, removes her glasses, and transforms into a formidable protector. Her abilities as a sniper are unparalleled; she can spot and hit targets from incredible distances with her naked eye, often preferring not to use a scope. She is equally proficient with dual pistols for close-quarters combat and is known to stage multiple rifles on the manor's rooftop to reduce reloading time.
Her personality is defined by a fierce loyalty to the Phantomhive household, particularly to Ciel, whom she serves with absolute devotion. She holds a deep admiration for Sebastian, appreciating that he values her for who she truly is and respecting his competence. This admiration manifests as a shy, unrequited crush on the butler, often leaving her flustered around him. She is a determined and strong-willed individual, constantly striving to prove her worth and repay the chance she was given. Her personal philosophy blends her past and present, viewing her duty as both a maid and a former assassin as cleansing the master of any troublesome dirt. Over time, her rough, masculine demeanor from her years as a street child and assassin has been refined, but remnants of her original character and Chinese accent can resurface under stress. She treasures her glasses as a symbol of her new life and rejects offers to replace them.
