Description
Mei Lin is a young woman of Chinese descent who serves as a maid in the Phantomhive household during the late nineteenth century. Born in 1865, she came to England from China with her parents on a tea clipper, but they soon died in an epidemic, leaving her an orphan on the streets of London. To survive, she lived as a street urchin, where she disguised herself as a boy, cut her hair short, and wore masculine clothing. She survived by forming a small group with two other orphans, using her exceptional eyesight to shoot expensive earrings off wealthy women with a slingshot while her companions retrieved the loot to sell. In 1877, she accidentally injured the ear of a woman who belonged to a powerful Chinese mafia group known as the Qing Bang. In retaliation, her two friends were killed before her eyes, and she was forcibly recruited into the organization to become an assassin. For the next ten years, she was trained to use firearms and operated as a professional sniper for the mafia under the code name Owl.
Mei Lin possesses a striking appearance with long, straight, reddish-brown hair that is typically tied into two high pigtails. Her eyes are a hazel color, though they are almost always hidden behind large, round-rimmed glasses. These glasses are a gift from her master, Ciel Phantomhive, and despite the prescription being incorrect for her severe farsightedness, she cherishes them deeply and refuses to replace them because they were the first precious thing given to her by her master. In her role as a maid, she wears a distinctive blue and white uniform designed by the family's dressmaker, Nina Hopkins, which includes a corset that is also bulletproof. She is around 165 centimeters tall and, as noted by Nina, has a surprisingly voluptuous figure that contrasts with her otherwise reserved demeanor.
Her personality is defined by a stark duality. In her daily work as a maid, Mei Lin is famously clumsy, scatterbrained, and accident-prone. She constantly breaks dishes, misreads measurements such as putting thirty spoonfuls of detergent instead of three, and uses shoe polish instead of wax on the handrails. Her severe farsightedness means she can see distant objects with perfect clarity but struggles immensely with anything up close, which is the primary cause of her endless mistakes around the manor. She is shy, nervous, and prone to blushing, especially around the butler, Sebastian Michaelis, for whom she secretly harbors romantic feelings. She is also extremely superstitious and has a well-known fear of ghost stories. However, the moment she takes off her glasses, her personality transforms completely. Her stuttering and nervousness vanish, replaced by the cold, focused, and deadly precision of a professional killer. As a sniper, she is calm, ruthless, and highly efficient, dedicated entirely to the task of eliminating her master's enemies.
Mei Lin's primary motivation is loyalty and a desire to prove her worth. Having been forced into a life of crime and violence, she finds a new purpose and a sense of belonging in the Phantomhive household. She is fiercely loyal to Ciel Phantomhive, her master, and views her role as more than just cleaning. She carries a personal philosophy that a maid's job, like an assassin's, is to "cleanse the master of any troublesome dirt," meaning she sees her lethal skills as another form of service. Working as a maid also provides her with a profound sense of joy and normalcy; she has stated that she is happy to be able to wear a skirt for the first time in her life. This new life, where she is accepted for who she is, drives her to protect the household at any cost.
Within the story, Mei Lin is a key member of the Phantomhive staff, serving alongside the gardener Finnian, the chef Baldroy, and the butler Sebastian Michaelis, who acts as her direct supervisor. While her domestic skills are poor, her true value lies in her role as a hidden guardian of the manor. She is responsible for nighttime security and has demonstrated her abilities multiple times, most notably when she single-handedly took down several members of the Noah's Ark Circus who had infiltrated the estate. Using multiple rifles pre-positioned on the roof to reduce loading time, she precisely shot and killed the aerial artists Peter and Wendy from a great distance without using a scope, saving the lives of her fellow servants. Her sniper skills are so advanced that she can accurately fire a musket with both hands as if it were a machine gun and hit moving targets in near-total darkness. In close quarters, she is also highly proficient with a pair of pistols.
Her key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with Ciel Phantomhive is one of absolute fealty. Ciel, aware of her past, trusts her with his life and gave her the glasses she treasures. Her feelings for Sebastian Michaelis are more complex; she is deeply shy and flustered around him, but his recognition and praise of her sniping abilities made a powerful impression on her and helped solidify her loyalty to the household. She also shares a deep camaraderie with her fellow servants Finnian and Baldroy, working alongside them as a close-knit team, even if their shared clumsiness often results in chaos. Nina Hopkins, the family's dressmaker, also takes an affectionate interest in Mei Lin, helping her refine her feminine appearance and style.
Mei Lin undergoes a significant character development from a hardened killer to a devoted servant. Her past was one of violence and coercion, forced to work for a criminal organization with no hope of escape. This changed when she was ordered to assassinate Ciel Phantomhive, the Queen's Watchdog. She set up a sniper position and waited for the perfect shot, but Sebastian Michaelis detected her and foiled the attempt with inhuman speed, capturing her. Rather than killing her, Ciel and Sebastian offered her a choice: a job as a maid at Phantomhive Manor. Recognizing that returning to the mafia would mean certain death and that this was a chance for a new life, she accepted. Under Sebastian's meticulous and often harsh guidance, and with a new wardrobe from Nina, she shed her masculine, rough exterior and adopted the persona of a clumsy but well-meaning maid. While her outward clumsiness remains, her inner self has found peace and a sense of family she had lost since childhood.
