TV-Series
Description
Ai-kun is a small, enigmatic creature discovered by the aspiring singer Ranka Lee on Island 1 of the Macross Frontier fleet. Physically, Ai-kun is characterized by fluffy, emerald-green fur, round black eyes, and a long, bushy tail that is often larger than its body. A prominent, ruby-like red mark is embedded on its forehead. Small pink protrusions on its body are actually part of its tentacles, which it can extend to grasp objects or rescue others. Despite having no visible hands or feet, it moves by contracting and relaxing its muscles in a caterpillar-like fashion.

Initially, Ai-kun has a playful and mischievous streak, famously causing chaos at Mihoshi Academy by stealing a pair of Sheryl Nome's panties and fleeing through the school, leading to a frantic chase. Despite this comedic introduction, its core personality is affectionate and loyal. It becomes deeply attached to Ranka, finding comfort by hiding in her hair or clothing. This devotion remains unwavering, even as it begins to undergo dramatic physical changes.

Ranka names her new pet Ai-kun, a name derived from the song Aimo. She keeps its existence a secret, as it is illegal to keep unknown alien creatures due to the potential risk to the colony ship's ecological balance. The primary motivation for Ai-kun is simply to be close to Ranka, seeking her warmth and responding to her presence. For Ranka, Ai-kun becomes a source of comfort and a secret companion. However, Ai-kun's role in the story becomes much larger than that of a simple pet. It eventually disappears, leading Ranka to search for it. During this time, it is revealed that Ai-kun is actually a larval form of the Vajra, the giant insectoid alien species that is the primary antagonist of the series. This discovery is a major turning point, as Ai-kun's existence proves that the Vajra are not mindless monsters and that a connection between species is possible.

Its key relationships are central to the plot. Its bond with Ranka Lee is the most significant. She is its caretaker and the person to whom it is most attached. Ai-kun also interacts briefly with Sheryl Nome during their first, chaotic encounter. Later, in the theatrical film adaptation, Ai-kun uses a fold barrier to save Sheryl when she is blown into space, showcasing a more heroic side. Ai-kun's disappearance and subsequent evolution force Ranka to confront the truth about the Vajra, motivating her to leave the fleet with her brother, Brera Stern, in an attempt to return Ai-kun to its home world.

Throughout the story, Ai-kun undergoes a notable development. It starts as a tiny, harmless-looking pet but eventually evolves into a stage-2 Vajra, growing appendages and a tougher, chitinous exterior. Despite this frightening transformation, its personality remains unchanged, and it continues to stay by Ranka's side. In the television series, after the conflict ends, Ai-kun remains with Ranka even as the rest of its species fold to another galaxy. In the theatrical version, its evolution is slightly different, as it grows wings on its back and can emit light in response to Ranka's singing.

Ai-kun possesses several notable abilities. It is highly mobile and can use its tentacles for grabbing and saving others. It reacts strongly to Ranka's singing and can emit a soft glow in response. One of its most remarkable powers, demonstrated in the film version, is the ability to generate a fold barrier, a powerful defensive energy field. Ultimately, its most important ability is the one it has no control over: its very existence serves as a living link between humanity and the Vajra, proving that coexistence is possible.
