Description
Akio Furukawa is the father of Nagisa Furukawa and the husband of Sanae Furukawa. Together with his wife, he runs the Furukawa Bakery, a small business attached to their home. He has a youthful appearance, standing 175 centimeters tall, with short red hair, two distinct antenna-like strands, amber eyes, and a slim build. He is almost always seen with a cigarette. On the surface, Akio is loud, boisterous, and often childish, enjoying roughhousing, witty comments, and practical jokes. However, this playful exterior conceals a deeply kind, sympathetic, and caring nature. His childlike enthusiasm makes it easy for people, especially children, to befriend him. In his free time, he loves playing baseball with local kids in the small park next to the bakery and is an avid fan of the Gundam franchise. A running source of comedy involves his relationship with his wife’s baking: Sanae’s bread is notoriously inedible, yet Akio frequently eats it to spare her feelings, leading to him chasing after her while proclaiming his love for it. Before becoming a baker, Akio was a passionate and talented stage actor. He gave up this dream because of a traumatic incident when Nagisa was very young. Both parents were often away working, and one snowy day Nagisa went outside to wait for them, collapsed from a high fever, and nearly died. In desperation, Akio carried her to a special place in town and prayed for her life, offering to give up everything. After she recovered, he and Sanae decided to live only for her, quitting their jobs to open the bakery so they could always be by her side. As Akio states, a parent’s dream is for their child to achieve their own dreams. Within the story, he serves as a pillar of support for his family and a surrogate father figure to the protagonist, Tomoya Okazaki. His role evolves from a comedic, suspicious guardian to a source of strength and wisdom. When Tomoya begins dating and later marries Nagisa, Akio provides guidance on being a man and a husband, employing him at the bakery and testing his resolve with a baseball challenge. He is instrumental in helping Tomoya reconcile with his own father and with his daughter, Ushio, years later. Akio shares a deep, enduring love with his wife Sanae, characterized by playful bickering and shared sacrifice. He has a close bond with his granddaughter, Ushio, whom he and Sanae raise for the first five years of her life, and he insists she call him “Akki” instead of a traditional grandfather name. Notable abilities include his skill as a baker, exceptional baseball talent as both hitter and pitcher, considerable physical strength, and a background in acting that gives him a talent for performance and disguise. In moments of crisis, such as when Nagisa loses confidence on stage or after her death, Akio provides passionate encouragement and becomes the bedrock for his grieving family.
