TV-Series
Description
Dr. Black Jack is the central figure of his namesake series, a master surgeon whose real name is Kurō Hazama. His life and career were forged by a horrific childhood incident. When he was a young boy, he and his mother were caught in a powerful explosion, likely from a leftover mine. His mother died from her injuries, while his own body was torn nearly to pieces. He was saved only by the miraculous and dedicated efforts of a surgeon named Dr. Jōtarō Honma. The physical and psychological scars of this event are permanently etched upon him. Part of his hair turned stark white from the shock, and his body is covered in surgical stitches, with the most prominent scar running down his face. The skin on one side of this scar is noticeably darker because it was taken from his best friend, who was of African descent; Black Jack refuses to have the color corrected as a sign of respect. This near-death experience became the singular motivation for him to pursue a career in medicine, with the goal of becoming a surgeon like the man who saved him.

In his professional life, Black Jack presents a figure of stark contradictions. He is an unlicensed genius of the operating room, possessing skills that seem to border on the supernatural. He can perform incredibly complex surgeries with speed, precision, and ingenuity, often taking on cases that other doctors have declared hopeless. He has operated on dozens of patients simultaneously and has even performed life-saving procedures on himself in extreme circumstances. Despite his godlike abilities, he operates outside the official medical establishment. Having lost his license for defying his superiors to save a loved one, he works from a secluded clinic, traveling the world in his black cape and black car to treat patients.

His most famous and controversial trait is his fee. Black Jack demands immense sums for his services, sometimes millions or billions of yen, which has earned him a reputation for being a greedy, callous mercenary. However, this appearance is a carefully maintained facade. His personal code is far more complex. He often uses his fees to teach wealthy or arrogant patients a lesson about the value of life, and he gives a great deal of the money to charity, purchasing land to protect nature or funding other medical care. For a patient who moves him with their story or suffering, he will perform the surgery for free or for whatever they can afford. While he may initially refuse to lower his price, he has been known to change his mind when presented with new information or evidence of genuine need.

In his personal life, Black Jack is solitary, anti-social, and often rude, a self-protective response to a world that judges him by his scarred appearance. Despite his prickly exterior, he is deeply principled and compassionate, holding the highest ideals of the medical profession sacred. This is most clearly seen in his relationship with Pinoko, his adopted daughter. Pinoko, an artificial girl created from a teratoid cyst, lives with him as his self-proclaimed wife, and although he often scolds her, he cares for her deeply and is fiercely protective of her. This relationship softens his more cynical edges over time, revealing his capacity for familial love.

Throughout his many encounters, Black Jack is driven by an absolute dedication to preserving life. He is portrayed as a force of nature, a watcher who often lets events play out before intervening to teach a moral lesson or to uphold his principle that life must be saved at all costs. He has a particularly strong opposition to euthanasia, believing that no one has the right to end a life, and this puts him in ideological conflict with other characters, such as Dr. Kiriko, who assists those who wish to die. His abilities extend beyond human medicine, as he is frequently called upon to perform delicate surgeries on animals ranging from killer whales and lions to deer and bears, treating all life with the same level of skill and dedication.
