Description
Juri Kuran is a pivotal figure who, though appearing primarily in flashbacks and memories, serves as a foundational influence on the entire narrative. She was a Pureblood vampire and the matriarch of the esteemed Kuran family. Juri was the only daughter of the last Kuran King and Queen, making her the younger sister of both Haruka Kuran and Rido Kuran. She was also the beloved sister and wife of Haruka, with whom she had two important children: Kaname Kuran and Yuki Kuran, the series' protagonist. Juri is noted for her striking appearance, being the spitting image of her daughter, Yuki, though Juri's dark brown hair was a richer, darker shade with a curlier, messier texture.
In stark contrast to her daughter's more reserved nature, Juri's personality was vibrant, cheerful, and fierce. She was described as a strong woman who prioritized her family above all else, yet she was also mischievous, playful, and enjoyed teasing her son Kaname. Unlike the often passive Yuki, Juri was blunt, outspoken, and could be loud and fierce when she lost her temper, easily becoming irritated with her husband Haruka. Her passionate nature was evident when she vehemently objected to Kaien Cross's plan to destroy all vampires, physically opposing him and declaring that not all vampires were evil. Her spirit was so bright that characters like Isaya Shoto and Kaien Cross described her as being like the very blaze of the sun. She was a high-spirited individual, deeply dedicated to her dream of a peaceful coexistence between vampires and humans.
Juri's primary motivations were rooted in her love for her children and her desire to see them live happy, safe lives. The most significant event defining her role in the story occurred ten years before the main timeline. Her elder brother, Rido Kuran, who harbored an obsessive desire for her, trespassed into the Kuran mansion with the intent of taking Yuki for his own gain. To protect her young daughter, Juri made the ultimate sacrifice. She used her exceptional skill in spells to suppress Yuki's vampire side and erase her memories, effectively turning her into a normal human girl. This act cost Juri her life, but it was done with the fervent wish that Yuki could grow up free from the dangers of the vampire world. Her last wish was for her son, Kaname, to protect Yuki.
Juri's key relationships are central to her character. As the beloved sister-wife of Haruka Kuran, their relationship was one of persistence and deep love; though Haruka’s persistence initially irritated Juri, she eventually fell in love with him. Her relationship with her other brother, Rido, was a source of great tragedy and conflict, as his twisted obsession with her led to the destruction of their family. Juri's bond with Kaname was one of genuine maternal love, despite the complex circumstances of his existence, and she often playfully wished he would be less serious. Her most profound relationship was with her daughter Yuki, for whom she gave her life to secure a future. Furthermore, Juri had a significant impact on Kaien Cross, the future headmaster of Cross Academy. They first met as enemies, with Kaien attempting to kill her; however, after she spared his life while pregnant, he developed a deep respect for her. This encounter was instrumental in Kaien abandoning his genocidal campaign against vampires and dedicating himself to creating a school where humans and vampires could coexist, as Juri had always dreamed.
Juri possessed all the standard powers of a Pureblood vampire, including immortality, enhanced strength and speed, and a potent healing factor that could regenerate from almost any wound. However, her notable abilities lay elsewhere. She was said to excel in spells, a proficiency she demonstrated to its fullest extent when she cast the powerful magic to seal Yuki's vampire nature and reshape her memories. Additionally, Juri could wield anti-vampire weapons, a rare ability for a vampire, and she used a weapon called the Artemis rod, which she could transform into a scythe. She passed this weapon and its unique ability down to her daughter, Yuki. Her development, though tragically cut short, is defined by her final act of maternal sacrifice and her lasting legacy, which continues to guide the actions of her children and protectors long after her death.
