TV-Series
Description
Hanabusa Aido is an aristocratic vampire and a prominent supporting character in the second season of the anime. He is the heir to the Aido family, one of the most esteemed noble lineages among vampires, and as such holds a position of considerable influence within vampire society. Aido is easily recognized by his blonde hair and typically wears the Night Class uniform. Among the human Day Class students, he has earned the nickname Idol for his charismatic and flirtatious demeanor.

Aido's personality is marked by a striking duality. On the surface, he is outgoing, cheerful, and sometimes reckless, often openly flirting with human girls and carelessly asking about their blood types, a behavior that can jeopardize the secrecy of the vampire world. He can appear friendly and amiable one moment, but this can swiftly give way to a more vindictive and cruel side when the situation calls for it. Despite his occasional brashness, he is deeply observant and perceptive, having deduced that the human-looking Zero Kiryu is a vampire long before it became public knowledge, a fact he chooses to keep to himself as he sees no benefit in revealing it.

The core of Aido's motivation is his fierce, almost absolute, loyalty and admiration for the pureblood Kaname Kuran. He, along with his cousin Akatsuki Kain, is known as one of Kaname's right-hand men, and his devotion is a primary driving force behind many of his actions. This admiration, however, does not make him a passive follower. Aido is deeply curious and possesses a strong independent streak. Troubled by the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Kaname's parents ten years prior, which he doubts was a simple suicide, Aido actively investigates the Kuran family history in secret, believing he can uncover the truth and lend Kaname his power. This tendency to overstep boundaries in his quest to help often results in punishment from Kaname. In the second season, his internal conflict becomes more pronounced after he witnesses Kaname kill another pureblood, an event that deeply disturbs him but does not waver his loyalty.

Within the story, Aido serves as a key member of the Night Class and a protector of Cross Academy. His role becomes more prominent during the holiday break, where he chooses to stay behind at the school instead of going to his family's residence, driven by his anxieties and suspicions regarding Kaname's plans. He is often tasked with guarding important individuals, such as Yuki Cross, following orders from Kaname even when he personally struggles with the assignment. Aido also provides moments of tension and comic relief, his outbursts and bickering with others like Ruka Souen contrasting with the series' darker tones.

Aido's key relationships significantly shape his character. His bond with Kaname is the most central, evolving from a childhood refusal to be friends to a profound, lifelong dedication. A flashback reveals that a young, prideful Aido initially rejected the gentle young Kaname, only to have Kaname gift him a marble. Years later, after the tragedy of Kaname's parents, a changed Aido kept that marble as a treasured symbol of his newfound loyalty. He shares a close, long-standing friendship with his cousins Akatsuki Kain and Ruka Souen, having been playmates since childhood. Kain often serves as a calm counterpart to Aido's impulsive nature. While he is not fond of Yuki Cross, he tolerates her because of Kaname's clear care for her, and he is present for several key moments that test his understanding of Kaname's true intentions.

Throughout Vampire Knight Guilty, Aido undergoes subtle but significant development. He transitions from a follower who simply admires Kaname to an active investigator who seeks to uncover the pureblood's secrets, believing it is the only way to truly help him. His loyalty is tested when he realizes Kaname is orchestrating a complex and potentially dangerous plot, symbolized by broken chess pieces in Kaname's study. In the series' climax, when Kaname coldly reveals he has used all the Night Class members as pawns to protect Yuki, Aido is the one who sees through this harsh declaration. He laughs, recognizing that Kaname's attempt to push them away is itself an act of care, reaffirming his decision to remain loyal despite the risks. This resolve is further demonstrated in the final episode, where he, Kain, and Ruka choose to follow Kaname regardless of his wishes, solidifying his role as one of Kaname's most devoted and perceptive companions.

Aido possesses notable supernatural abilities befitting his aristocratic status. His primary power is the ability to conjure and manipulate ice, using it as a weapon in combat. This ability is a hallmark of his lineage and makes him a formidable fighter. His skills, combined with his keen observational talents and unwavering dedication, make him a valuable, if sometimes volatile, ally in the complex and dangerous world of vampire politics.
