Description
Faurink Maya, most often called Folli or Faury for short, is a central figure in the world of Shadow Skill. She is a practitioner of the Sui Rem, a form of sorcery that utilizes magical talismans in battle. Before taking on her more well-known name, she was originally named Fia Arcana, also written as Fear Arcana. She is the daughter of a famed Sui Rem sorcerer who was also a master of the Shadow Skills.
Folli’s initial personality is forged in tragedy and a rigid code of honor. She first regarded Elle Ragu as a rival, but when news arrived that Elle had killed her father in battle, that rivalry turned into a burning rage. The laws of the Sui Rem dictate that when a master is slain, their disciples must cast off their names until the master has been avenged. Adhering to this law, Fia Arcana renamed herself Faurink Maya, adopting the nicknames Faury or Folli. Her primary motivation for much of her early life is to track down and kill Elle to restore her father’s honor and her own name.
This quest for vengeance leads her to a climactic confrontation with Elle inside a mine. During the battle, Folli unleashes the Nothingness Talisman, a forbidden spell unique to her family. The fight causes the mine to collapse, and Folli becomes trapped under the debris, unable to escape. In a surprising turn of events, Elle saves her life, carrying Folli to safety. This act of mercy sows the first seeds of doubt in Folli’s mind about Elle’s supposed guilt. Unable to reconcile the image of her father’s killer with the woman who just rescued her, Folli decides to accompany Elle, hoping to understand the kind of person she truly is.
As time passes, Folli’s role transforms completely. She becomes one of Elle’s closest friends and allies, frequently acting as an older sister figure to her. She serves as a grounding presence, looking out for Elle as her conscience. Folli personally views Elle as a child of light, beloved by the gods, while she sees herself as a child of darkness who can only envy that light. In the group dynamic, which includes Elle and her adopted brother Gau Ban, Folli often provides the brains to Elle’s considerable brawn, acting as a sort of tactical watchdog.
The truth about her father’s death eventually comes to light through the machinations of Louie Francil, a fellow disciple of her father and the watcher sent by the Sui Rem society to ensure Folli and Elle finished their duel. It is revealed that Louie, not Elle, was the real murderer. Learning this, the remaining animosity between Folli and Elle dissolves, and their friendship grows even stronger, solidified when they join forces to defeat Louie.
Folli’s abilities are rooted in her Sui Rem training. She is a highly skilled talisman user, able to cast a variety of spells and magical effects in combat. Her power is such that Elle Ragu, a legendary warrior, admits that Folli is the most powerful opponent she has ever faced. Later details from the manga also reveal a softer side to her personality, noting that she is a famously bad cook. It is also revealed that she was married at the age of fifteen to a man named Woaks Porelo, though she left him to pursue her quest for revenge against Elle.
