Description
Marudashi, frequently referred to by the shortened name Maru, is a supporting character in the anime and manga series xxxHOLiC. She is one of two seemingly identical young girls, alongside her counterpart Moro, who serve as assistants in the wish‑granting shop owned by the witch Yuuko Ichihara. Her full name, Marudashi, translates to “completely exposed,” a meaning shared by Moro’s full name, likely a playful reference to the series’ title. Marudashi and Moro appear as fraternal twins with very long, curly blue hair tied into pigtails and blue eyes. They almost always speak in unison, often finishing each other’s sentences, and are rarely seen apart.

Marudashi and Moro are soulless beings who cannot leave the shop under any circumstances; their bodies would disintegrate if they attempted to do so. It is suggested that they were created by Yuuko, possibly with help from the legendary magician Clow Reed, to serve within the shop. Their primary function is to assist with chores and act as a cheering squad, but their deeper purpose is far more significant: their constant concentration is what keeps the shop itself in existence. As a side effect of this concentration, they occasionally fall into long, deep bouts of sleep.

In terms of personality, Marudashi is energetic, cheerful, and playful. She and Moro often tease Watanuki, the young man who works at the shop to pay for his own wish, and they frequently distract him from his duties. Despite their mischievous behavior, they are deeply loyal and caring. They show genuine concern for both Yuuko and Watanuki. In one instance, when Watanuki returned home in distress, Marudashi and Moro immediately sensed something was wrong and, after he collapsed, dragged him as far as the shop’s gate to deliver him to his friend Doumeki. They are also capable of moments of solemnity, as seen when they explain in a distant tone why they cannot join a festival.

Their motivations are simple: to serve Yuuko faithfully and maintain the shop. After Yuuko’s death, they briefly disappear but are brought back by the last vestiges of Yuuko’s power, after which they transfer their loyalty to Watanuki. This marks a key development in their role; they continue to assist him as the shop’s new caretaker, though they remain the same trouble‑making, spirited companions. Their relationship with each other is symbiotic—they are virtually inseparable and their synchronized speech and actions underscore their shared identity. With Watanuki, they develop a bond of mutual annoyance and affection, and he comes to value their presence despite the chaos they create.

Notable abilities include their essential power to sustain the shop’s physical form through sheer mental focus. They also possess an intuitive sensitivity that allows them to detect when something is wrong with those they care about. However, their inability to leave the shop remains a permanent limitation, tying them eternally to that space and to the duties Yuuko assigned them.
