Description
Morodashi, also commonly referred to as Moro, is a supporting character in the anime and manga series xxxHOLiC. She is one of two identical-appearing girls who live and work in the wish-granting shop of the witch Yūko Ichihara, the other being Marudashi, or Maru. The full name Morodashi, like her companion's, carries a meaning related to being completely exposed or showing everything, a thematic nod to the series' title. Moro is visually characterized by shoulder-length pink hair and pink eyes, while Maru has blue hair and blue eyes, allowing them to be distinguished despite their similar appearance and behavior.
Moro, together with Maru, serves as a helper and a kind of cheerful attendant within the shop. They are often seen speaking in unison, finishing each other's sentences, or repeating phrases. Their personalities are bright, playful, and somewhat mischievous; they frequently tease the shop's later assistant, Kimihiro Watanuki, and distract him from his chores. However, they also express genuine care and concern for both Yūko and Watanuki, sensing when something is wrong and trying to help when they can, despite their limitations.
A central aspect of Moro's nature is that she, like Maru, lacks a soul. Because of this, she is bound to the shop and cannot leave its premises. Attempting to do so would cause her body to disintegrate. This limitation is also tied to an important function: the concentration of both Moro and Maru is what sustains the shop's existence and its ability to remain hidden from those not meant to find it. As a side effect, they experience long, deep periods of sleep.
Her motivations are simple: to serve Yūko, whom she is deeply attached to, and after Yūko's death, to transfer that loyalty to Watanuki, who inherits the shop. When Yūko passes away, Moro and Maru briefly vanish, but Yūko uses the last of her power to bring them back. From that point onward, they continue their role under Watanuki's care.
In terms of key relationships, Moro is virtually inseparable from Maru; they function as a pair and are often referred to as fraternal twins. Her relationship with Yūko is one of devotion, and with Watanuki it evolves from playful annoyance to genuine loyalty and affection. She and Maru are also known to interact with other characters who visit the shop, though always within its confines.
Notable abilities are limited and not explicitly presented as combat or magic skills. Beyond their role in maintaining the shop's concealment through concentration, Moro and Maru possess no other supernatural powers. They cannot leave the shop, and their existence is entirely tied to the shop and its master. There is no indication of personal development or change in their core nature over the course of the story; they remain constant as cheerful, soulless beings who find purpose in serving their chosen master.
