Description
Chikuma Koshirou is a young ninja of the Iga Tsubagakure clan, identified as one of the ten elite warriors chosen to represent his clan in a deadly, generations-old blood feud. He serves as the personal apprentice to the powerful and ruthless Tenzen Yakushiji and is also a childhood friend of Oboro, the young woman who leads the Iga.
Physically, Koshirou is recognized by his long, messy black hair and notably bushy eyebrows. Two small, unexplained scars mark the bottom of his left cheek. He is typically dressed in a black sleeveless kosode over a netted shirt, paired with black hakama. This appearance changes drastically after he is blinded in a confrontation with the Koga clan’s leader, Gennosuke. Following this trauma, he begins wearing a black mask that covers the upper half of his face, which features a large red kanji character, and he also develops slight facial hair, giving him a darker and more approachable demeanor.
His personality is defined by a deep and often conflicting sense of loyalty. As Tenzen’s apprentice, he is expected to be ruthless and follow orders without question. However, his long-standing affection for Oboro creates a powerful internal conflict. While he is skilled and dutiful, he is not as cruel as his master. He is portrayed as being reluctant to engage in battles where the opponent is at a severe disadvantage, a sense of chivalry that Tenzen is forced to lecture him against in the war with the Koga. This inner turmoil reaches its peak when he must choose between his duty to his master and protecting Oboro.
Koshirou’s primary motivation is his devotion to Oboro, which goes beyond the loyalty of a clan member to something more personal. He is protective of her from the beginning, always rushing to her aid. This devotion is tested when Tenzen’s ambitions put Oboro in danger, leaving Koshirou agonizing over which of his two masters he should ultimately side with. His role in the story is that of a gifted but tragic enforcer, an immensely powerful warrior whose fate becomes intertwined with the two people he is most loyal to.
His most significant relationship is with Oboro, whom he has known since childhood. He is also defined by his position as Tenzen Yakushiji’s pupil, whose influence and cruelty he struggles to reconcile with his own nature. He bears a strong antagonistic rivalry with Gennosuke Kouga, viewing him as the man who has captured Oboro’s heart and is directly responsible for his blinding. Later, he is pitted against Hyouma Muroga, a blind Koga ninja, in a crucial confrontation between two sightless warriors.
Koshirou undergoes a tragic transformation over the course of the story. He begins as a highly skilled, albeit somewhat reluctant, young warrior. His blinding at the hands of Gennosuke marks a turning point, leaving him helpless and in a state of depression as he struggles to adapt to his new reality. This physical loss forces him to rely on his other senses and further darkens his personality. His development culminates in his final battle, where his impaired senses lead to his death, deceived by an enemy.
In terms of abilities, Koshirou is a formidable fighter. He wields a pair of kama, which are small scythes, with near-perfect accuracy, using them effectively in close combat or as thrown weapons. His most notable technique is the Kamaitachi, a deadly ninpou that allows him to create miniature, razor-sharp vacuums simply by inhaling and exhaling. These vacuums can grind and cut opponents to pieces, making it one of the most destructive abilities in the series. However, after losing his sight, his enhanced senses, while adapted, never fully compensate for his blindness, making him vulnerable. Ironically, his blindness later proves to be both a liability and an asset, as it renders him immune to the Koga clan’s dojutsu eye techniques, though it does not save him from his ultimate fate.
