Description
Gennosuke Koga is the heir to the Koga Manjidani clan, having been chosen to succeed his grandfather, Danjo, as the leader. Prior to the central conflict of his story, he sought to end the centuries of hostility between the Koga and the rival Iga clan through a marriage of peace to Oboro, the princess of the Iga. Their union was a genuine attempt to forge a new future, unburdened by the hatred of the past.

In terms of personality, Gennosuke is a calm, gentle, and introspective individual, often described as an idealist and a scholar. He is a dedicated pacifist who firmly believes that holding onto grudges is a pointless and self-destructive practice. He advocates for looking toward the future and ending the cycle of vengeance. Despite his peaceful nature, he is not weak-willed. When pushed into a corner or when his clansmen are directly threatened, Gennosuke is more than capable of swift and lethal action, demonstrating a fierce resolve to protect his people. His serious and honorable demeanor is balanced by a deep, sincere affection for Oboro, which becomes a source of great inner turmoil.

Gennosuke's primary motivation throughout the story is to prevent the resumption of the deadly feud between the Koga and Iga. When the long-standing truce is broken, he refuses to simply participate in the ensuing slaughter. Instead, he leads his clan on a dangerous expedition to Sunpu Castle to personally plead with the shogun to reinstate the peace treaty. His goal is not victory, but the survival of both clans and the realization of his dream of a unified future with Oboro. This places him directly in opposition to the expectations of his own clan and the forces pushing for war.

In the story, Gennosuke serves as the leader of the Koga ninja and the narrative's male lead. His role is that of a man of peace caught in a brutal war, struggling to reconcile his principles with the duty he owes his clan. His presence forces a moral and philosophical question into the center of the conflict: whether ancient hatreds must always dictate the future. His journey takes him from an optimistic young man hoping for a diplomatic solution to a tormented leader watching his comrades fall, yet he never fully abandons his core beliefs.

His most significant relationship is with Oboro. Their love is genuine and mutual, and their planned marriage was the cornerstone of his vision for peace. As the clans begin to kill one another, his feelings for her remain, filling him with torment as he is forced to see her as an enemy. He also shares a deep bond of respect with his teacher and uncle, Hyouma Muroga, who trained him and instilled in him many of his beliefs. Furthermore, he has a strong friendship with his clansman, Jousuke Udono, whose loyalty and camaraderie he values.

Throughout the narrative, Gennosuke undergoes significant development. He starts as an idealist who believes he can talk his way to peace, but he is forced to confront the harsh reality of the conflict as his friends and family are killed. He is torn between his personal love for Oboro and his responsibility as a leader to see the battle through, a struggle that drives him to despair. Ultimately, his journey culminates in a tragic acceptance that the cycle of violence may be impossible to break through force or will alone, leading him to a final, heartbreaking resolution.

Gennosuke possesses several notable abilities. His most fearsome power is a hereditary technique known as Dojutsu. This is a form of hypnosis that reverses the homicidal intent of anyone who meets his gaze directly. In practical terms, if an enemy looks into his eyes with the intention to kill him, that deadly intent is turned back upon itself, forcing the opponent to commit suicide. He can activate this power at will, and when it is active, his corneas turn crimson red and his pupils shine a brilliant gold. In addition to this formidable technique, Gennosuke is an extremely skilled swordsman, capable of matching and defeating opponents with far more combat experience than himself. Due to harsh training with his uncle, he has also developed his other senses to a superhuman degree, allowing him to fight effectively even when blinded.
