Description
Amayo Jingoro is a member of the Iga Tsubagakure clan and one of the ten ninja selected to fight in the deadly conflict against the Kouga clan. His outward appearance is terrible and strange, marked by pale grey, wrinkled skin covered in circular marks, with shabby black hair and pointed ears that give him an elf-like quality. Within the original novel, his appearance is compared to that of a drowned person with blue mold growing on him.

Jingoro possesses a unique and grotesque ability tied to his constitution. When he comes into contact with salt, his body undergoes a transformation, dissolving into a viscous, semi-liquid state reminiscent of a slug or jelly-like creature. In this form, he becomes significantly smaller, allowing him to slither through the tightest passages, ooze up vertical surfaces, move silently, and even enter an opponent’s body through exposed orifices to deliver a killing stroke. While this power grants him a terrifying advantage for assassination and infiltration, it comes with a severe weakness: the process is caused by dehydration, and he suffers an overwhelming, burning thirst until he can be rehydrated with fresh water. His greatest fear is the sea, as the vast amount of salt water would cause him to dissolve completely and irreversibly.

In terms of personality, Jingoro is loathsome and cowardly at heart. He specializes in assassination rather than direct combat, preferring to sneak up on his opponents and being quick to flee when at a disadvantage. He is also deeply perverted. On one occasion, he comes across Okoi, a captive Kouga kunoichi, bound and nearly naked in a storehouse. Believing a false claim that she had been raped, he removes his clothes and attempts to assault her himself.

His role in the story is that of a scheming assassin for the Iga clan. Early on, he helps trap Gennosuke Kouga in the Iga village and plots to assassinate him, though his attempt is foiled by Oboro, who uses her mystical eyes to cancel his technique and revert him to his normal state. He later manages to kill the Kouga ninja Josuke Udono by forcing his dissolved form into Josuke’s throat and suffocating him from the inside.

Jingoro has key relationships with his Iga comrades, though he is not well-liked. Akeginu is perhaps his closest ally, as the two often plot together and she shows some concern for him. In contrast, the Kouga ninja Gyobu Kasumi is his direct nemesis, as Gyobu physically overpowers him on multiple occasions. Jingoro’s development is minimal but culminates in his demise during a sea voyage. Despite his terror of the ocean, the Iga clan must cross the water to pursue the Kouga. During the journey, Gyobu discovers his position, picks him up, and throws him into the sea. He begins dissolving immediately, frantically calling for help from Akeginu, but by the time she reaches him, his body has already melted away and scattered in the salt water, meeting a gruesome end that fulfills his deepest fear.
