Description
Jingorou Amayo is a male ninja belonging to the Iga Tsubagakure clan, selected as one of the ten elite warriors to represent his clan in a deadly conflict. His appearance is distinctly unsettling, marked by pale grey, wrinkled skin covered in circular marks. He has shabby, balding black hair and pointed ears reminiscent of an elf’s. His attire is simple and shabby, consisting of a pale-colored kosode and pale green hakama tied with a rope, and he typically goes without shoes.
At his core, Jingorou is loathsome and cowardly. Unlike many of his comrades who favor direct combat, he specializes in stealthy assassination, preferring to sneak up on his targets. He is quick to flee from any situation where he finds himself at a disadvantage. His personality is further marred by a perverted streak, as he once attempted to rape an incapacitated female ally, Okoi, when he found her bound and helpless. Among his own clan members, he is not well-liked; interactions with him are often limited to the practical necessity of ensuring his survival, such as being thrown into a river to rehydrate. His primary motivation is self-preservation, and he participates in the clan war not out of honor but as a means to eliminate his targets using underhanded methods.
Jingorou possesses a bizarre and powerful ability that allows his body to dissolve into a viscous, semi-liquid state. He activates this transformation by covering himself with salt. In this fluid form, he becomes much smaller, with tiny arms and no legs. This state grants him incredible infiltration capabilities, enabling him to slither through the tightest passages, ooze up vertical surfaces, and move in complete silence to deliver a killing stroke. His most gruesome method of assassination involves crawling into an opponent's mouth or throat and suffocating them from the inside.
However, this ability comes with a significant and dangerous weakness. Remaining in his dissolved form for an extended period causes him to suffer from severe dehydration, which shrivels his body away. To restore his human form, he must immerse himself in fresh water. Paradoxically, while he needs water to survive, he has a huge and debilitating fear of the sea. This is because salt water would forcibly keep him in his dissolved state, causing him to inevitably and completely dissolve away, leading to his death. This fear extends to boats and the ocean itself. In terms of conventional weaponry, he carries a knife or tanto, though he relies almost entirely on his unique dissolving ability for his stealth assassinations.
His role in the story is that of a supporting antagonist who works from the shadows. His key relationships are largely negative or utilitarian; he is a despised figure even among his allies, who see him as a tool rather than a comrade. Jingorou meets his end when he is thrown into the sea by an opposing warrior, Gyoubu Kasumi. As he feared, the salt water triggers his transformation permanently, and his body is completely dissolved and scattered in the ocean, marking a fitting end for a character who embodied cowardice and treachery.
