Description
Gyoubu Kasumi is a member of the Kouga Manjidani clan and stands as one of the ten elite ninja selected to fight in the bloody conflict against the Iga Tsubagakure. His driving force is a deep, personal vendetta against the Iga, rooted in a traumatic childhood event. Gyoubu's father, Renbu, was sent to the Iga village as a peace envoy but was ambushed and killed. As a child, Gyoubu discovered his father dying, and in his final moments, Renbu reinforced a harsh ninja code, telling his son that compassion was a weakness. The following day, a peace treaty was established, robbing Gyoubu of any immediate chance for revenge, a frustration so intense that he shaved all the hair from his body as an expression of his fury. This loss, and the feeling of powerlessness that accompanied it, became the foundation of his life, driving him to transform his body into a mountain of raw physical strength.
In terms of personality, Gyoubu is defined by his overwhelming hatred for the Iga, a sentiment common among the Kouga but intensely personal in his case. He is cynical about the prospect of peace, believing that Gennosuke’s attempts to reconcile with the Iga are a mistake. He is often impatient and quick to anger, as seen when he accuses a fellow clan member of rationalizing the situation with the Iga and when he angrily demands retribution after an initial attack. However, this rage does not completely define him. He is capable of forming bonds, demonstrated through his friendly, almost avuncular relationship with the younger female ninja Okoi, whom he often takes on hunting trips.
Within the story, Gyoubu is a formidable aggressor for the Kouga clan. He is not initially part of the main group traveling to Sunpu but instead volunteers to stay behind and hunt down the Iga ninja, believing he can end the conflict himself. His role is that of a stealthy infiltrator and a brutal close-quarters combatant. He successfully sneaks aboard the Iga’s ship and, in a pivotal moment, catches the Iga leader Tenzen off guard, emerging from the floor to strangle him in an attempt to kill him. This event highlights his primary function as an assassin who uses his unique abilities to eliminate key targets. His key relationships are primarily with his fellow Kouga clan members, including the clan leader Gennosuke, whom he follows despite disagreeing with his pacifistic approach, and Saemon Kisaragi, with whom he partners during the infiltration of the Iga village.
The portrayal of Gyoubu varies between different versions of the story. The search results indicate that the anime adaptation provides him with significantly more humanization and development compared to the original manga or novel. In the anime, his backstory with his father is explored in detail, giving the audience a clear, sympathetic reason for his hatred. In contrast, the manga version touches on his backstory much less, making his animosity toward the Iga appear less personal and more like an inherited tribal grudge. The original novel describes him as being born without body hair, resembling a strange monk, but similarly does not delve deeply into his personal history.
Gyoubu possesses two notable abilities that make him a uniquely dangerous ninja. His primary technique allows him to merge his body with the surface of any solid object, such as a wall, floor, or the ground. This ability enables complete secrecy in movement and attack, effectively making him invisible when deployed. However, it has significant limitations. To use his technique, he must be completely naked, as he cannot merge with clothing or carry weapons. Furthermore, merging offers him no defensive advantage; any attack made against the surface he is hidden in will transfer to his body. The surface he merges with must also be at least as large as his own body. Despite his specialization in stealth, Gyoubu is also a paragon of raw, physical strength. He has trained his body relentlessly since his father's death, developing a physique of immense power. He typically fights by using his strength to break his opponents' bones, and his kicks are powerful enough to send people flying through the air.
