Muroga Hyouma is a senior member of the Kouga Manjidani clan and serves as the second-in-command to the clan leader, Danjou Kouga. He is the maternal uncle of Gennosuke Kouga and has been his teacher since Gennosuke was a small child, training him in both martial skills and the inherited secret technique of their bloodline. Hyouma is a blind ninja, but his lack of sight is far from a disability. His other senses, particularly his hearing, have been sharpened to an extraordinary degree, allowing him to detect the exact number of enemies approaching from miles away and to perceive his surroundings with near-radar-like precision. This heightened auditory sense makes it all but impossible for anyone to take him by surprise.

Hyouma possesses the same Doujutsu ability as his nephew, a powerful hypnotic eye technique passed down through generations of the Kouga clan. When he opens his eyes and meets an opponent’s gaze, the Doujutsu forces that person to turn their own homicidal intent against themselves, causing them to kill themselves or each other. Unlike Gennosuke, whose Doujutsu is activated only when he consciously chooses to open his eyes, Hyouma’s Doujutsu is always in effect. As a result, he must keep his eyes closed at all times to avoid accidentally killing allies or innocents. The technique can only be used effectively at night. This constant risk is one reason Hyouma has so thoroughly refined his non-visual senses.

In terms of personality, Hyouma is wise, honorable, and composed. He possesses a meticulous and perceptive nature, remaining calm and steady even in the midst of violent conflict. Although he harbors a natural distrust of the Iga clan due to the long-standing hostility between the two ninja groups, he is not consumed by blind hatred. He understands that people on both sides are human beings who live, feel, and die in the same way. This broader perspective is something he imparted to Gennosuke, helping his nephew see past the cycle of vengeance and work toward peace. Hyouma wholeheartedly supports Gennosuke’s desire to end the bloodshed through marriage and reconciliation with the Iga princess Oboro.

His role in the story is that of a loyal subordinate and protector. He acts as Danjou’s right hand and is one of the ten Kouga ninjas selected to fight in the war against Iga after the historic peace treaty is broken. Despite his personal reservations about the conflict, he carries out his duties with unwavering resolve. He is also a close friend of Saemon Kisaragi, another Kouga ninja, and shares a bond of mutual respect with several of his clansmen. Hyouma’s unwavering faith in Gennosuke’s leadership is evident throughout the series; he is willing to defend his nephew with his own life and follows his commands without question.

Hyouma’s development is marked by his quiet acceptance of the war’s tragic inevitability. He does not undergo a dramatic transformation but remains a steady moral anchor for the Kouga side, consistently promoting reason over rage. His death is a testament to his discipline. He faces the Iga ninja Koshiro in single combat. Because Koshiro is also blind, Hyouma’s Doujutsu is useless against him, and the fight becomes a test of their other senses. Koshiro slashes Hyouma’s ear, destroying his ability to locate his opponent through hearing. Though mortally wounded, Hyouma does not fall; he remains standing on his feet even after death, a final display of his indomitable will. He is the seventh of the Kouga’s ten chosen ninjas to die.

Hyouma’s notable abilities extend beyond his Doujutsu and superhuman hearing. He is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant who relies on his acute senses to fight in close quarters.
