Description
Kai Kudo is the central protagonist of the anime E's Otherwise. He is a young teenage boy who, along with his sickly younger sister Hikaru, is an orphan. The two possess powerful psychic abilities, which in the world of the story mark them as "E's," individuals feared and discriminated against by ordinary humans. To escape this persecution and find protection, Kai and his sister are taken in by a powerful organization called ASHURUM. While Hikaru is placed in the organization's hospital due to her frail condition, Kai is recruited into a special psychic task force within ASHURUM known as AESES, where he undergoes rigorous training in combat, hacking, and the use of his powers.

Personality-wise, Kai is portrayed as a calm and somewhat idealistic individual who is deeply devoted to the well-being of his sister. His primary motivation throughout the story is to care for Hikaru and find a way to cure her mysterious illness, which is why he initially agrees to work for ASHURUM. He has a notable, almost comical aversion to sweets, becoming uneasy at the mere sight or mention of them. Despite his training as a soldier, he often questions the nature of his missions and the true intentions of those around him, suggesting a thoughtful and moral core that resists the organization's more ruthless methods.

Kai's role in the story begins as a loyal, if somewhat naive, operative of ASHURUM. However, his path changes dramatically after a mission in Gald City goes horribly wrong. In the aftermath of a catastrophic psychic explosion, he is separated from the organization and washes up on the shores of Gald, a run-down city controlled by crime syndicates. He is rescued by a kind-hearted girl named Asuka and her foster brother, a mercenary named Yuki Tokugawa, who harbors a deep distrust of espers. This period is crucial for Kai's development as he sees for the first time a life outside of ASHURUM's control. Living with Yuki and Asuka, he witnesses the "kinder side of humanity" and begins to question the organization's teachings and its true, sinister goals. As the narrative progresses, Kai transitions from a tool of ASHURUM to a defiant rebel, eventually confronting the organization's leader, Eiji, to rescue his sister and stop a plan that threatens to destroy humanity.

Kai's key relationships define much of his journey. His bond with his sister, Hikaru, is the emotional anchor of the series, and every major decision he makes is to ensure her safety. His relationship with Yuki starts with mutual suspicion but grows into a strong partnership of two people fighting against a common enemy. Asuka, who develops a crush on him, serves as a symbol of the innocent life he wishes to protect. He also shares a significant rivalry with another powerful esper named Shen-Long Belvedere, which begins with antagonism but eventually develops into an uneasy alliance when both realize they are being manipulated by ASHURUM.

Kai's notable abilities are linked to his nature as an esper. He is believed to have the potential to be immensely powerful, much like his sister. Specifically, his powers grant him the ability to manipulate sound waves, which he can use to create devastating attacks. Over the course of the series, his understanding and control over these abilities grow significantly as he breaks free from ASHURUM's brainwashing conditioning and discovers his true identity and strength as a psychic.
