Description
Mr. Piccolo is the owner and operator of the Piccolo Seaplane Company, a workshop in Milan that builds and repairs seaplanes. He is the grandfather of Fio Piccolo and has served as Porco Rosso’s personal mechanic for many years, maintaining the red Savoia S.21 and carrying out whatever work the bounty hunter requires. His sons have left Milan to find work elsewhere, leaving Mr. Piccolo to run the business largely with the help of his female relatives, who form the entire workforce of his shop during the economic downturn of the interwar period.

In personality, Mr. Piccolo is spirited and energetic for a man of his age, with a clear enthusiasm for his craft and for turning a profit from his work. He is protective of his granddaughter Fio and expresses concern about her safety, yet he ultimately trusts Porco Rosso enough to allow Fio to accompany him on the return flight to the Adriatic. His religious inclination is occasionally noted, and he is known to be somewhat superstitious or devout in his personal beliefs.

Mr. Piccolo’s main motivation is to keep his business afloat and support his family, including his granddaughter, while preserving the high technical standards of his workshop. He is a specialist in aeronautical engines and takes pride in the quality of his work, which is why Porco entrusts him with the critical task of rebuilding the damaged seaplane after it is shot down by Donald Curtis. His role in the story is essential: without his technical expertise and his willingness to let Fio take the lead on the project, Porco would not be able to return to the skies and face his rivals.

His key relationships are with his granddaughter Fio, who is his most talented engineer, and with Porco Rosso, whom he has known for a long time as a loyal customer and trusted associate. Despite his gruff warnings about Porco’s behavior, Mr. Piccolo respects the pilot and never wavers in his support. Over the course of the film, Mr. Piccolo shows no dramatic personal development, but his decision to delegate the restoration work to Fio demonstrates faith in her abilities and a quiet recognition that the next generation must step forward.

In terms of notable abilities, Mr. Piccolo is a master seaplane builder and engine specialist, capable of constructing and repairing complex aircraft using largely manual techniques and the limited resources available in his Milan workshop. His knowledge of early aviation technology is comprehensive, and he is able to direct the all-female team to produce a rebuilt Savoia S.21 that is lighter, faster, and more powerful than the original—a testament to his expertise and leadership.
