TV-Series
Description
Aoyagi Ritsuka is the twelve-year-old protagonist of the story, a sixth-grader whose true name is Loveless, a fact from which the series derives its title. Physically, he is notably small for his age, standing 147 centimeters tall, and he bears the distinctive feline ears and long tail common to children in his world, which are markers of his youth and innocence. His small frame is frequently covered in bandages and adhesive bandages, physical evidence of the regular abuse he suffers at the hands of his mother, who has never accepted his current self.

Ritsuka's past is marked by a profound and unexplained rupture. At the age of ten, he experienced a sudden and complete personality change accompanied by total memory loss of his life prior to that point. Before the change, he was described as a popular, if academically average, and outgoing child. Afterwards, he transformed into a withdrawn, isolated, and exceptionally bright student who achieves perfect scores but has no friends. This shift has led his mother to reject him, insisting he is a different person inhabiting her son's body, a cruel accusation that deeply informs his fragile sense of self. He regularly attends therapy sessions with a doctor named Katsuiko to explore the cause of his amnesia, but the answers remain elusive.

The most significant relationship in Ritsuka's life is with his older brother, Seimei, who was his sole source of understanding and affection. Seimei's murder, which occurred shortly before the story begins, is a devastating loss that leaves Ritsuka feeling completely alone and without a reason to live. It is through his brother's death that Ritsuka meets Ikuza Agatsuma, a young man who claims to have been Seimei's "Fighter". In the world of Loveless, pairs of "Sacrifice" and "Fighter" do battle using magical word spells, with the Sacrifice bearing the pain of the attacks. As Seimei's final wish, Soubi is now meant to serve as Ritsuka's Fighter, a role Ritsuka inherits with great reluctance and confusion.

This inheritance shapes Ritsuka's central role in the story: a Sacrifice without his own proper Fighter, using another man's Fighter to uncover the truth behind his brother's death. His primary motivation is to find out who killed Seimei and why, seeking justice and avenging the only person who ever loved him. However, his mission is complicated by his deeply conflicted personality. Ritsuka is highly intelligent and possesses a startling maturity for his age, often reading complex philosophical works and approaching problems with logic. He is a pacifist at heart who strongly opposes violence and hates ordering Soubi to fight on his behalf. He is blunt, easily irritated, and has a sharp tongue, often expressing his hatred for various traits in others as a defensive mechanism to keep people at a distance.

One of his most defining traits is his profound distrust of love and verbal affection, largely a consequence of his mother's rejection and his fractured memories. He hates being told "I like you," believing that such feelings must be demonstrated, not just spoken. Early in his relationship with Soubi, he is deeply troubled and angered by Soubi's frequent declarations of "I love you," perceiving them as empty or manipulative. This skepticism creates significant tension, but as the story progresses and he witnesses Soubi's unwavering loyalty and care, Ritsuka begins to slowly understand the true meaning of affection and learns to accept it, though his vulnerability always leaves him fearing another betrayal.

To combat his intense fear of being forgotten—a fear born from his own amnesia and his mother's denial of his existence—Ritsuka obsessively takes photographs. He uses his camera to create tangible "memories," a way to prove that he was there and that his current self is real. This hobby is his anchor against the terrifying possibility of disappearing without a trace, as he often feels he is merely a placeholder until the "real" Ritsuka from before the age of ten returns. Over the course of his journey, Ritsuka develops from a lonely, emotionally closed-off child into someone capable of forming deep bonds, not only with Soubi but also with classmates like Yayoi and Yuiko, slowly learning to trust and to let others into his guarded world.
