Description
Masane Amaha, whose birth name is Yasuka Ohara, is the main protagonist of the anime series Witchblade. She was chosen by the Witchblade during the Great Quake that devastated a portion of Tokyo six years before the story begins. As a result of the disaster, she lost all memory of her life prior to that moment and was found unharmed at the epicenter, holding an infant whom she believes to be her daughter, Rihoko.

Masane is a kind-hearted and devoted single mother, but she also possesses a tomboyish and somewhat flighty personality, often coming across as careless or ditzy. This dynamic sometimes makes it seem as though her young daughter is the more responsible one. Despite her occasional scatterbrained behavior, Masane and Rihoko share an exceptionally strong and loving bond, and Rihoko is the central pillar of Masane’s life. Her primary motivation throughout the series is to provide a safe and peaceful life for her daughter. This maternal instinct drives her to make risky decisions and accept dangerous tasks.

After returning to Tokyo, Masane is arrested by the NSWF child services, who deem her unfit to raise Rihoko. While in custody, she is attacked by a monster and awakens the power of the Witchblade, an ancient and mystical artifact that manifests as a bracelet on her right wrist. She is subsequently recruited by the Doji Group, a powerful corporation, to destroy the X-Cons, monstrous creatures of unknown origin that terrorize the city. In exchange for her service, Doji Group offers her the financial and logistical support needed to raise Rihoko without interference from the authorities. Masane reluctantly accepts, driven by her need to protect her daughter.

Her role in the story is that of the current bearer of the Witchblade, a lineage of women throughout history who have wielded the weapon. She becomes entangled in a power struggle between the Doji Group and the NSWF, gradually uncovering the dark secrets behind both organizations and the true nature of the Witchblade itself.

Masane wields the Witchblade, which merges with her body and grants her immense combat capabilities, including enhanced strength, speed, agility, and accelerated healing. The weapon can adapt its form to the needs of the user; Masane typically manifests it as a blade extending from her arm, and she can also use her hair as a cutting weapon. However, the Witchblade exacts a heavy toll on its bearer, consuming them emotionally and physically, and Masane struggles with the temptation to use its power recklessly. Over the course of the series, she gains greater control over the Witchblade and unlocks more powerful forms as the stakes escalate.

Key relationships include her daughter Rihoko, who serves as her moral compass and the reason she endures her hardships. She also develops complex ties with the Doji Group executives, particularly Takayama, who offers her the job and becomes a figure of trust and romantic tension. The journalist Tozawa assists her in investigating the truth behind the X-Cons, and she clashes with other Witchblade bearers and Cloneblade users, such as Shiori and Maria, who force her to confront the darker aspects of her power.

Masane undergoes significant development from a somewhat aimless and amnesiac young woman into a determined and formidable protector. She confronts the true nature of her connection to the Witchblade in a pivotal moment around episode twelve, where she must face a harrowing decision that tests her will to safeguard Rihoko at any cost. Throughout the series, she repeatedly chooses to sacrifice her own safety and well-being for her daughter’s future, embodying the conflict between her duties as a bearer and her desire for a normal, peaceful life.
