Description
Lyra is a young alchemist who appears exclusively in the 2003 anime adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist and is not present in the original manga. She is first introduced working as the most trusted subordinate of the corrupt Lieutenant Yoki in the mining town of Youswell. Her background is left largely unexplored, but she enters the story as a skilled alchemist who has placed her faith and loyalty entirely in Yoki, serving him as both a bodyguard and a maid. She is ambitious and aspires to become a State Alchemist, viewing the position as a path to honor and purpose. She harbors a deep admiration for Edward Elric and expresses a desire to become as great an alchemist as he is, though her understanding of what that truly means is initially shallow.

In terms of personality, Lyra is initially portrayed as earnest and sincere but also naive and easily misguided. She follows Yoki without question, believing in his authority and her own duty to serve him. When she first encounters Edward and Alphonse Elric, she is confrontational and acts as Yoki's enforcer, but she is also visibly unsettled by Edward's actions when he protects the townspeople and tricks Yoki. This conflict between her loyalty and her growing awareness of right and wrong marks the beginning of her development.

After she is defeated in a battle with Edward, she begins to recognize the error of blindly following Yoki. Three years later, she has become the apprentice of the alchemist Dante, seeking to improve her skills and become a better alchemist who uses her abilities to help others rather than simply obeying authority. When she meets Edward and Alphonse again at Dante's mansion, she apologizes sincerely for her past behavior and credits them as the reason she changed her perspective on life. Edward notes that she has made a complete turn in her attitude.

Her role in the story evolves from a minor antagonist or obstacle for the Elric brothers to a more sympathetic figure and, tragically, a victim. Dante, whose own body is aging, uses the Philosopher's Stone to forcibly switch bodies with Lyra, effectively possessing her. Dante then kills the original Lyra to keep her secret hidden. For the latter half of the 2003 anime, Lyra's physical appearance becomes the vessel for Dante, who serves as the central antagonist. Lyra's own consciousness is erased in this process.

Lyra possesses a notable alchemical ability that relies on a small transmutation circle embedded in her necklace. She uses this circle to manipulate air, condensing moisture in the atmosphere into a liquid state and then vaporizing it explosively, forcing the resulting shockwave at high velocity toward her opponents. This technique is powerful enough to destroy buildings. Her skill level is considerable, placing her among the more competent alchemists in the series, even if her judgment initially leads her astray.

A parallel version of Lyra appears in the film Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, where she works in a different capacity in the alternate world, serving tea to Edward and Fritz Lang, but she regards Edward with disdain in that setting.
