Description
Dolchett is a recurring character from the Fullmetal Alchemist narrative, appearing primarily as a member of the rogue homunculus Greed's gang operating out of the bar known as the Devil's Nest. His background is one of tragedy and survival, as he was originally a soldier in the Amestrian military who, after being injured on the battlefield, was taken to a laboratory where he was subjected to inhumane experiments. These experiments transformed him into a human chimera, a being whose genetic material was alchemically fused with that of a dog. Despite this horrifying origin, Dolchett possesses a surprisingly positive and optimistic personality. He chooses to focus on his continued existence and the conveniences it offers rather than the cruelty he endured, stating that he is at least grateful to be alive.
As a dog chimera, Dolchett’s personality is significantly marked by a heightened sense of loyalty, which he directly attributes to his canine heritage. This intense fidelity is the primary driver of his motivations and actions, making him a steadfast and willing subordinate to Greed, whom he follows not out of fear but genuine allegiance. While not inherently malevolent, his role in the story is that of an antagonist to the Elric brothers. He is first introduced alongside his fellow chimeras, Martel and Roa, when the group is ordered by Greed to kidnap Alphonse Elric in order to learn the secrets of his soul-bound armor body.
Dolchett is a capable fighter, proficient with a katana and possessing the natural dog-like attributes of agile movements and a very keen sense of smell. He is also known to wear a gi as part of his attire. However, despite his physical abilities, which are far beyond those of a normal human, Dolchett struggles with a sense of inferiority. Throughout the narrative, he is repeatedly and soundly defeated by the remarkably powerful individuals he encounters, including Alphonse Elric, Edward Elric, and Izumi Curtis. These consistent defeats lead him to develop a complex about his own strength, and he is prone to becoming angry when teased about it, often needing to reaffirm his power to himself. Key relationships define his arc, most importantly his bond with Greed, which he honors with his life. He also shares a close camaraderie with his fellow chimeras, Martel and Roa, with whom he was turned into a chimera and serves alongside.
The development of Dolchett’s character is most powerfully displayed during the military assault on the Devil’s Nest led by King Bradley. When the bar is raided, he and his comrades are put in a position to flee. However, acknowledging his dog-like nature that cannot abandon its owner, Dolchett chooses to stay and fight against overwhelming odds. He releases Alphonse and asks him to ensure Martel’s safety before turning to face the Führer. In his final moments, Dolchett laments his own nature, remarking that while he wishes he could run away, being a dog prevents him from leaving its master behind. He then launches an attack on King Bradley alongside Roa, but his body is swiftly cut in two by the Führer, resulting in his death. His notable abilities include his expert swordsmanship, superhuman speed and agility, a powerful sense of smell, and a form of transformation that brings out more of his canine traits in combat.
