Description
Martel is a human chimera from the Fullmetal Alchemist series, created by fusing a human with a snake through alchemical experimentation. She was originally a soldier in the Amestris State Military who suffered severe injuries during combat on the Southern Borders. To save her life, she was subjected to experiments in Central City, resulting in her transformation into a chimera. This process granted her the ability to stretch, contort, and elongate her limbs, neck, and torso in a manner reminiscent of a serpent's movement. After escaping the laboratory where she was created, Martel joined the homunculus Greed and his gang, operating out of an establishment called the Devil's Nest in the city of Dublith. Her primary motivation is a desire for revenge against the military for the suffering and dehumanization she endured. Despite her monstrous appearance, Martel retains a strong sense of humanity, loyalty, and a capacity for empathy. She is resilient and determined, but her thirst for vengeance often clouds her judgment. Within Greed's group, she works alongside fellow chimeras Dolcetto and Roa. A pivotal moment in her story occurs when Greed orders the capture of Alphonse Elric. Martel infiltrates Alphonse's hollow suit of armor to restrain him from within, effectively immobilizing him. During this captivity, she develops a brief but meaningful rapport with Alphonse, who treats her with understanding and compassion rather than hostility, leading her to reveal details about her painful past. Her storyline reaches a tragic conclusion when she attempts to avenge her fallen comrades by confronting Fuhrer King Bradley, who is secretly the homunculus Wrath. While hiding inside Alphonse's armor, Bradley's sword pierces through the metal and kills her. Her death is sudden and brutal, leaving Alphonse deeply affected and serving as a catalyst for his later emotional and spiritual trials. Martel's development is limited by her short presence in the narrative, but she evolves from a simple antagonist motivated by revenge into a more layered character whose vulnerability and humanity are briefly exposed before her end. Her notable ability is her serpentine flexibility and elongation, which she uses both for combat and infiltration.
